2023 Elections: Why we may cancel results in Kogi — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may invalidate election results from areas that have experienced crises during the presidential and National Assembly elections in Kogi.

This warning comes in response to recent reports of electoral disturbances in several local government areas, including Anyigba and Dekina in the Kogi East, Mopa in the Kogi West, and parts of Kogi Central, where it is alleged that voting materials were stolen by thugs.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Kogi state, Dr. Hale Longpet, issued a warning while reacting to the crises that erupted in some parts of the state.

“You know the electoral law says that where there are disruptions to the process, the result will be cancelled, the very particular units’ results will be cancelled.

“The issues initially were only in the Kogi East and Central but I can’t tell exactly where and where in the state have been affected until the results are brought by the electoral officers.

“We understood that because of the violence, those affected areas couldn’t conclude election there.

“I’m shocked that people can go to that level and disrupt something that everybody should have enjoyed.

“Election is a peaceful and willful thing that people are offered to freely participate.

“Again, if people are given assurance that everyone will enjoy a pleasant experience, why then should we have thugs invading the whole town or the local government, disrupting the conduct of the elections?” he asked.

Longpet said, “This is very sad and shocking when you look at the loss of lives involved.”

He emphasized that participating in an election should not be viewed as an act of war. He added that if someone is not interested in voting, they are not obligated to do so.

The REC further stated that those who are genuinely interested in improving their communities should exercise their right to vote and not be hindered from doing so. He also shared that he personally accompanied security officials on a motorcade to monitor the election process, from Adankolo to Crucial, through Kabawa and Falele.

“Yet in all these places, we didn’t see anyone angry but people were all smiling and casting their votes peacefully,” he added.

Presidential Polls: INEC To Conduct Elections Anambra Despite Insecurity

Dr. Queen Agwu, the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commission, has disclosed that the presidential and national assembly polls will be held in all the 5,720 polling units in the 21 local government areas of the state despite the insecurity ravaging the state.

Agwu also stated that out of the 2.5 million people registered to vote, only 5,000 people did not pick up their permanent voter cards.

She stated these on Friday during a press conference, adding that sensitise and non-sensitive materials have arrived in the 21 local government areas except six polling units with zero registration.

She also assured of the commission’s readiness for the conduct of the 2023 general elections in the state, insisting that insecurity is not going to be an issue.

According to her, enough security operatives have been deployed in all the local governments and are poised to action.

She said, “Election will be held in all the local government areas of Anambra State, despite insecurity.

“We have deployed staff in all polling units in the state. We have a lot of security personnel in the state and we are conducting elections in all the polling units in the state.

“We don’t want to disenfranchise anybody in the state. The commission has fully deployed materials in all the 21 local government councils in the state and it is prepared for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

INEC Receives Sensitive Materials From CBN For Adamawa Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Adamawa state has received sensitive election materials from the Yola branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the general elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Hudu Ari received the items on Thursday, saying they would be taken to the various local government areas for the elections beginning this Saturday.

Ari said, “We have come to the CBN to collect the sensitive and other election materials, and they will be conveyed to the various LGAs.”

Ari had earlier convened a press briefing on Monday and declared that INEC was ready to conduct the February 25 and March 11 elections across the state.

He had said his office had received 4,104 BVAs for the 4,104 polling units in the state where 2,196,556 registered Adamawa voters would be expected to vote.

The state chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC), Bello Babajo, who was at the CBN branch in Yola when INEC received the election materials, said he believed INEC was prepared for the elections.

“We’ve seen the materials. I think INEC is ready. We the political parties are also prepared for the elections,
” Babajo said.

INEC will be conducting elections to fill Electoral offices in 37 constituencies in Adamawa State in the course of the February 25 and March 11 elections.

The constituencies are governorship, one; senatorial, 3; House of Representatives, 8; and House of Assembly (25).

INEC Distributes Sensitive Materials To LGAs In Ekiti

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has distributed sensitive materials for the poll to the sixteen local governments in Ekiti State, ahead of Saturday’s election.

During the distribution of the materials at the premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ado-Ekiti, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, Prof Ayobami Salami said the early distribution was to avoid lateness of the materials to the polling units on election day.

He pointed out that everything needed for the smooth conduct of the poll was ready, saying the election would hold as scheduled, as against rumours in some quarters that it would be postponed.

The REC reassured Nigerians that their votes would count, calling on them to come out to exercise their franchise during the election.

Speaking on behalf of other political parties, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, in Ekiti State, Mr Owoola Daramola expressed satisfaction with the distribution process of the materials and expressed optimism that the election would be transparent.

Earlier during the briefing of observer groups that will participate in the election in Ekiti State, Prof Salami urged them to be transparent and neutral, and also avoid partisanship in the discharge of their duties.

He told them not to be judgemental in their reports, saying the legitimacy of the 2023 elections could be affected by their reports, hence they must be factual while giving the reports.

“We expect a final report that will guide us in future elections and the report should look at the entire electoral process, rather than concentrating only on the proceedings of just one day,” he stated.

In his remark, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr Moronkeji Adesina said the police in conjunction with other security agencies in the state are prepared to ensure the safety of voters during the polls.

Represented by Mr Olu-Victor Babayemi, the Commissioner of Police, noted that a control centre has been created where observations and complaints could be forwarded for quick response.

The materials were distributed in the presence of stakeholders including security agents and party representatives.

Gov. Emiefele tells INEC that the CBN will not be used to sabotage the 2023 elections.

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emiefele, has stated that the CBN will not be used to sabotage the upcoming general elections.

Emefiele spoke on Tuesday, February 7, during a meeting with Mahmood Yakubu, chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)/ Their meeting was held at the CBN headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, Yakubu said while service providers needed for elections are generally paid by electronic transfer, there are critical areas such as transportation and emergency situations where cash payments will be required.

Responding, Emefiele said:

“This issue of paying logistics for people who are going to be transporting election materials to wards, certainly I give it to you that because we regard the INEC project as an urgent national assignment, it cannot fail.

The central bank will not allow itself either to be used or to be seen as an agent that frustrated positive outcome of the election.

If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you.

I will make sure that we will not allow ourselves to be seen as an agent that frustrated a positive outcome of the election.”

JUST IN: Gunmen attack another INEC office.

Unidentified armed men have attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ojoto, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State.

According to reports, the gunmen also attacked the Nnobi Police Station and a residential building within the station, located also in the same Council Area.

The hoodlums, armed with IEDs, petrol bombs, and other explosives invaded the facilities at about 1:45 am on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, in four unmarked Sienna vehicles.

Although, details of both attacks are still sketchy, however, a source said the hoodlums were repelled by the security operatives before they could carry out any dastardly act.

The source said that the gunmen, while shooting sporadically killed a 16-year-old boy, a relative of a serving policeman in the station, while the another victim, a 15-year-old female, sustained a gunshot injury and has been taken to the hospital where she is receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said security had been reinforced in the areas, just as the situation is still being monitored.

According to Ikenga, “Anambra State Police Command today 1/2/2023 has reinforced security deployment in the state, following an attack on the INEC office in idemili South, Ojoto and Nnobi Police Station.

“The hoodlums came in their numbers by 1:45 am today 1/2/2023, with four unmarked Sienna vehicles, armed with IEDs, Petrol bombs and other explosives, invaded the INEC office, the Police Station and the residential building in the station.

“Unfortunately, one boy aged 16 years, a relative of a serving policeman in the station was murdered by the armed men, while the other, a female aged 15 years old sustained a gunshot injury. She has been taken to the hospital where she is receiving treatment.

“The situation is being monitored and further details shall be communicated, please.”

Inec suspends collation and declaration of Anambra election result

INEC’s Chief Returning Officer for the election, Professor Florence Obi declared that collation of election and announcement of results from Anambra state elections have been suspended.

According to reports, people waited till around 12.15am on Monday November 8th for the results to be called out when Professor Florence Obi made the announcement, she stated that results will be announced only after a supplementary election has been conducted in Ihala local government which is the only local government where people have not voted.

She said: “The outstanding results are for Ihiala Local Government Area where for various reasons, the commission could not deploy materials yesterday (Saturday).Consequently, based on Constitutional considerations and provisions of the Electoral Act, as well as revised regulations and guidelines for the conduct of election issued by the commission, a supplementary election is indicated for Ihiala Local Government Area.”

Charles Soludo of APGA won from the other 18 local governments where people voted and people will vote in Ihala local government Anambra on Tuesday 9th 2021.
