‘’You found a great guy, a very great guy, blessed guy, comes from a decent family. One thing I will advice you Temi is, you have to succumb to the wish and caprices of your husband. He is your husband. He is your boss. There is no more daddy o..don’t call me.

One thing I like about both of them and have observed is that they are truly in love with each other. Temi is an entrepreneur, Tosin is an entrepreneur. So you match each other. This is made in heaven.

For Tosin, you are going to go places. I have seen the entrepreneurial skill in you. When we were much younger, we used to think we used to hustle but not like your generation. You are hustlers, real hustlers and it has always paid off.

Continue to love Temi. When you have issues and problems, just keep it within yourself. Never call any friend to say I have this problem. Just keep it within your walls and God will bless you and bless your marriage.”

Why I Didn’t Go to University — Femi Otedola

Nigerian billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola has opened up that he didn’t attend a university.
He confessed that his lack of flair for academics is the reason he did not attend university.
Otedola, who is the chairman of First Bank Holding, disclosed this in his 286-page memoir released on Monday.
He said he stopped school after the Lower Sixth examination and did not return for the Upper Sixth.
According to Otedola, at that time, all he wanted was to be involved in his father’s printing press.
“My parents enrolled me at the University of Lagos Staff School in 1968, at the age of six.

“But there was something about academia and me; we were not compatible. I finished primary school in 1974 because I repeated a class. Even when I was allowed to pass, I consistently anchored the bottom rungs of our end-of-term examination results. My interests were definitely not in academia.

“I started Form 1 at age 12 and was there for three years.”

“I started in Form 3 at Olivet, and as I rounded off the first year of my A Levels, my father was establishing his printing company, Impact Press, in Surulere, a residential and commercial district in Lagos State. I grew fascinated with the machines and told myself that my future would be inextricably tied to them. I managed to remain in school until the Lower Sixth examination was over. And then, I was finished; I never returned for my Upper Sixth. “All I wanted to do was get involved in business. “My father kept watch over me and drew me close,” he said in the book.

“If Nigeria was working, I wouldn’t control diesel market” — Femi Otedola

Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has said his control of Nigeria’s diesel market was not driven by a grand ambition but by “necessity” and the urgent need to respond to the country’s chronic infrastructure and energy failures.

In his upcoming memoir, Making It Big, Otedola recounts how widespread power outages, fuel scarcity, and a broken supply chain in an oil-rich nation created an urgent need he decided to fill.

“If Nigeria had been working well, I would have no business controlling the diesel market. There was no good reason for diesel to be scarce in an oil-producing country. But scarce it was. I simply saw a gap and capitalised on the inefficiency in the system,” he states.

He recounts how the 1993 military coup led by General Sani Abacha and the collapse of finance houses pushed him to seek a business entirely his own.

“In a sense, it took the coup for me to start thinking of a line of business that would be entirely my own, not connected to my father or the family in any way,” he says.

Contrary to claims that backdoor deals gave birth to Zenon Petroleum, he described the venture as a “blood, sweat and tears” effort, built through strategic investments and persistence.

In his words: “The collapse of the finance houses provided the opportunity for me to put my brains and talent to use. I was not going to get involved in collecting deposits and promising big returns. Not many know this behind-the-scenes origin story of Zenon, and how we came to dominate the market. Some seem to think we came out of nowhere and were handed a monopoly on a silver platter. In fact, there is a story behind every success… It took blood, sweat and tears for me to build Zenon from the ground up.”

He also advises aspiring African entrepreneurs to be discerning about their networks, warning, “You will encounter people who are waiting like angels to open the door and others intent on slamming it shut in your face.”

Beyond his personal story, the memoir also critiques Nigeria’s systemic dysfunction, from fuel scarcity in an oil-rich nation to chronic power outages, portraying his rise as both a testament to resilience and an indictment of governance failures that create space for private empires to thrive on public sector weaknesses.

‘You’re A Stupid Boy’ — Otedola Recounts His Encounter With Obasanjo In New Book

Billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola has shared details of a heated encounter with former President Olusegun Obasanjo over diesel deregulation, in his forthcoming memoir titled Making It Big: Lessons from a Life in Business.

In excerpts from the book, Otedola recalled that Obasanjo lashed out at him in 2004 following reports of diesel scarcity across Nigeria.

At the time, the federal government had recently deregulated diesel importation based on advice from Otedola and other private sector players.

Otedola’s company, Zenon Petroleum, had assured the presidency that private firms could meet national demand without the involvement of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which was then the sole importer, operating under a subsidy regime.

“When President Obasanjo deregulated diesel in 2004, Zenon took an unassailable lead in the market,” Otedola wrote.
“My opponents’ reaction was to tell the president that we’d turned the market upside down… and that industries were shutting down because there was no diesel.”

According to him, Obasanjo called him around 2am, visibly furious. “‘You’re a stupid boy! God will punish you!’ he shouted. ‘You persuaded me to deregulate diesel, and now there’s no diesel in the country!’”

Otedola said he flew to Abuja the next day to clarify the situation. “As soon as Obasanjo saw me, he flew into a rage again… I allowed him to cool down, and when he stopped talking, I explained the situation,” he wrote.

He told the former president that there were six ships with diesel waiting to discharge, and provided letters of credit as evidence.

He also alleged that some officials within the NNPC, opposed to deregulation, had deliberately misled the president to protect their subsidy benefits.

To counter the misinformation, Otedola said he began publishing the availability and price of diesel in newspapers to reassure the public and government of steady supply.

He described Obasanjo as a “determined and robust president” who, once convinced of a person’s integrity, stood firm in his support.

“How banks used ‘bewitching’ ladies to woo me for deposits” – Otedola

Billionaire businessman and Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Holdings Plc, Femi Otedola, has opened up on how banks once went to extreme lengths to secure his deposits when his business empire was booming — including sending attractive ladies to charm him.

Otedola shared this in his upcoming memoir, Making It Big: Lessons from a Life in Business, set to be released on August 18, 2025, under FO Books.

In excerpts from the book obtained by TheCable, the oil tycoon reflected on the highs and lows of his journey in the business world.

According to Otedola, there was a time banks were so desperate to win his favour that they sent “bewitching ladies” to lure him with tempting offers.

One moment, I was the darling of the banks, who did everything in the world to court me, do business with me, give me loans, take deposits from me. They would send bewitching ladies to make their offers more convincing,” he wrote.

However, his fortunes nosedive when global crude oil prices crashed and the naira suffered heavy devaluation.

The businessman disclosed that he lost over $1 billion to a combination of oil price collapse, forex issues, interest accruals, and stock market crashes.

“All told, I lost more than US$480 million to the plunge in oil prices, US$258 million through the devaluation of the naira, US$320 million because of accruing interest, and another US$160 million when the stocks crashed,” Otedola wrote. “It was devastating, like a terrible nightmare, but a nightmare would have been better: day would break, and I would wake up. There was no waking up from this.

He recalled how the same banks that once courted him turned cold and aggressive.

“Now I was waking up to the sight of hefty, barrel-chested men standing menacingly in front of my gate, waiting for the moment I’d step out of my compound.”

Otedola, who made his mark through Zenon Petroleum and later transformed African Petroleum into the now-defunct Forte Oil Plc, also narrated how a bad diesel shipment in 2008 purchased when oil was $147 per barrel arrived after the price crashed to $40, worsening his financial troubles.

This, combined with the naira devaluation from ₦120/$ to ₦167/$ in 2009, left Otedola battling with declining revenues and mounting foreign liabilities.
