Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £60 million plus add-ons.
Eze becomes Arsenal’s latest marquee addition as Mikel Arteta strengthens his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Arsenal opened their Premier League account with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, punishing Manchester United’s defensive frailties from a set piece.
Riccardo Calafiori reacted quickest to nod the ball over the line, handing Mikel Arteta’s side the lead.
New signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha impressed on debut, with Cunha striking the post and testing goalkeeper David Raya, but the finishing touch remained elusive.
Benjamin Sesko’s introduction after the break also failed to alter the outcome.
Arsenal, who struggled for attacking fluency, relied on their defensive organisation and depth from the bench to protect the lead.
Viktor Gyökeres and Martin Zubimendi endured difficult debuts, while substitutes Kai Havertz and Noni Madueke were introduced to steady the performance in the second half.
Paul Scholes has expressed doubts over Viktor Gyokeres’ suitability for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the Manchester United legend questioned whether Gyokeres was Arteta’s first-choice signing, pointing to Arsenal’s prolonged negotiations and indecision.
Gyokeres, who struggled during an earlier stint at Brighton, rebuilt his career at Coventry City before exploding at Sporting, where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances, including 52 last season and a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.
While acknowledging the Swede’s impressive record, Scholes queried his tactical fit at Arsenal.
He said that Gyokeres thrived in a counter-attacking system at Sporting, which contrasts with Arsenal’s possession-heavy approach.
“Is he going to be clever enough to make those runs in behind when Arsenal dominate the ball?” Scholes asked.
He also contrasted Gyokeres with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, suggesting the latter possesses the movement and intelligence suited to a team like Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Gyokeres’ lacklustre debut, just two touches in 13 minutes during a 1-0 loss to Spurs in Hong Kong, did little to silence critics.
Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, has affirmed that the Premier League trophy will be at the Emirates on Sunday, when they host Everton in their final fixture.
The Gunners have a slim chance of winning the title on the day if Manchester City drop points at home against West Ham.
Despite the disappointment of seeing City beat Tottenham to go top, Arteta still believes his side can come out on top on the final day of the season
Speaking to the Spanish media, Arteta said: “This is the nice part, fighting for the title until the last day.
“It will be the first time that the Premier League trophy will be there waiting at the Emirates since it was built, with red ribbons on it, because if we win and they don’t, it’s ours.”
Robbie Savage, a former Blackburn Rovers midfielder, has made a Premier League prediction.
He predicted that Chelsea will finish in the Premier League top four despite their slow start.
He, however, warned Arsenal that they won’t win the title.
Chelsea are currently 12th in the table after winning just one of their opening four fixtures under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
But Savage is backing Pochettino to turn things around at Stamford Bridge.
He told Planet Sport Bet: “When Mauricio Pochettino was appointed I thought Chelsea would get in the top four, and I still believe that.
“They’ve signed so many good, hungry players and with a manager like Pochettino and the way he can develop players and teams, I think that Chelsea will still finish in the top four.
“With no European football the extra time on the training pitch is going to be so valuable to Pochettino.”
For Arsenal, Savage claimed that the Gunners will not emerge champions next May, despite going so close last term.
“Even with the acquisition of Declan Rice, I don’t think Arsenal can win the league, simply because of Manchester City.
“If City weren’t in the Premier League, then I think Arsenal would win it, but unfortunately for Arsenal, they are,” Savage said.
Odumodublvck, the popular Nigerian rapper, is currently over the moon with joy.
The rapper beamed with joy after English Premier League giants, Arsenal, used one of his hit tracks to announce their new signing, Declan Rice.
The Gunners signed the England international from West Ham for a club-record fee of £105m.
Announcing his arrival via Twitter, Arsenal shared a video of the 24-year-old displaying his football skills with Odumodublvck’s song ‘Declan Rice’ playing in the background with the caption; “A new chapter begins.”
Odumodublvck shared the tweet, expressing pride.
He wrote, “Massive. Abj stand up. Declan Rice.”
In another tweet, the Abuja-based rapper thanked Arsenal fans who consistently asked the club to use the song in Declan Rice’s announcement video.
“Thank you to everyone who pushed the club to use the tune.
“You might think you did not have any impact on this, but I really do feel that you guys did.
“The pressure was werser by the day.
“God bless you all.
“I am so grateful,” Odumodu said.
