Euro 2024: Cristiano Ronaldo Under Fire As Portugal Crash Out

Danny Murphy, the former Liverpool midfielder, has criticised Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo for having little or no ‘impact’ in Euro 2024.

Portugal were eliminated from the competition on Friday after losing 3-5 on penalties to France in the quarterfinals.

Ronaldo missed a few big chances during the game, including a crucial shot in the first half of extra time when he shot the ball over the crossbar following a pass from Conceicao in the penalty box.

After his big miss, co-commentator Murphy shared his thoughts on Ronaldo’s performance.

He told the BBC: “I’d be having conversations with the manager. It does seem ridiculous at times that he keeps Ronaldo on when he is having no impact.

“He [Goncalo Ramos] kind of must be thinking, what was he brought here for?” Murphy asked.

I’m Not Finished – Pogba Clears Air on Juventus Terminating His Contract

Paul Pogba has stated that being banned for four years for doping is not the end of his career.
The 31-year-old has not played since August 2023 and has taken his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).
Pogba is hoping to see his suspension reduced to a two-year ban.
The Frenchman was suspended earlier this year after testing positive for doping twice (the A sample and then the B sample).
“I want to fight this, for me, injustice. An interview has come out, I don’t know if you’ve seen it all, they put something that … I hadn’t finished talking,” Pogba told Sky Italia.

“Pogba isn’t finished, Pogba is here and until you see me say that I’m finished, don’t worry. I have an incredible desire to come back, I feel like a child who wants to be professional. I train, I do everything I can to get back on the pitch.”
He added: “The latest news is I’m still a Juve player, I have the contract, but I haven’t had the opportunity to speak to the director and coach … there’s silence. I think they’re waiting for the outcome of the appeal, but you have to ask them.”

Euro 2024: UEFA Announce Decision On Banning Bellingham, Rice

UEFA have announced decision concerning England duo of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice over their offensive gesture following their dramatic 2-1 win over Slovakia at Euro 2024 on Sunday.
UEFA said it will not ban the players.
The governing body have reviewed the report from match officials and have instead opened disciplinary proceedings against the Three Lions for the lighting of fireworks and crowd disturbances.
Bellingham, who scored for 1-1, appeared to have made a lewd gesture towards the Slovakia bench.
Rice was also embroiled in a spat with opposition boss, Francesco Calzona.
But they have both been let off the hook.
A UEFA spokesperson told Mirror Football: “Following the review of the officials’ reports for ENG-SVK match, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the English Football Association for lighting of fireworks and crowd disturbances.

“The CEDB will take a decision on this case in due course. No further proceedings were opened from this match.”

Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh Speaks On Victor Osimhen’s Outburst Against Finidi George

Nigeria’s sports minister, John Enoh, has addressed Napoli striker Victor Osimhen’s recent social media criticism of former Super Eagles coach Finidi George for the first time.

Earlier this month,  it was alleged that Finidi George questioned Osimhen’s commitment to the squad after he had missed the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

Finidi was alleged to have faulted the commitment of some players before picking out Osimhen for making himself unavailable.

He was quoted to have said he can’t beg Osimhen to play for the national team after the player withdrew from their last two 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to injury.

Reacting to the comments attributed to Finidi, Osimhen claimed he reached out to Finidi about his injury, and had wanted to fly down to be with the players in camp which the former coach declined.

He said, “I knew things like these would happen and that’s why I have the videos and screenshots of when I called Finidi while I was with the doctor in Germany.

“I got injured in our (Napoli’s) last game against Lecce and I went to the MRI scan. And I called Finidi there for him to listen to the doctor too.

“I asked Finidi George to allow me stay with the players in the camp, but Finidi asked me not to bother that I should stay with my family.

“I’m not addressing anything, everybody knows I play my heart out whenever I’m playing for the club or national team. I’ll share the screenshot and videos of my conversation with Finidi for the sake of those believing what Finidi said.

“I’ve lost respect for that man because before I disrespect anybody, I always respect them.

Since the outburst, Osimhen has refused to apologise even after it was denied that Finidi didn’t make such comments about him

Speaking with Eagle7 FM Radio, The Sports Minister addressed the outburst for the time, saying he’s ordered the NFF not to make a pronouncement on the matter until they have heard from Osimhen.

“There has been a plethora of opinions on this,”he said. “Osimhen is a Trojan for Nigeria, but it was a low.

“I told the NFF not to make a pronouncement on this before they have engaged Osimhen. This is so especially because these are not the best of times for Nigeria football and we have to manage a lot of things.

“The NFF have to be focused and not be distracted.”

Euro 2024: Two Spanish Referees Sent Home Over Poor Officiating

Two Spanish referees have been sent home by UEFA following complaints against them at Euro 2024.
UK Metro reported that the two referees are Alejandro Hernandez and Jesus Gil Manzano.
Hernandez was the VAR official who ignored Scotland’s penalty claim in their 1-0 defeat to Hungary last Sunday.

Manzano was criticised for his error in France’s 1-0 win over Austria.
Both referees will take no part in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Manzano’s two assistants, Diego Barbero and Angel Nevado, have also been sent home.
This leaves only Martinez Munuera, a VAR official, as Spain’s sole representative for the remainder of Euro 2024.

Foden Temporarily Leaves England Euros Camp

Phil Foden has left  England’s Euro 2024 base in Germany.
He left temporarily to return home due to a “pressing family matter,” the English Football Association said on Thursday.

Foden, who won Premier League player of the year accolades for his starring role in Manchester City’s title triumph this season, has started all three of England’s games at the tournament so far.
It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will be available for the Three Lions’ last 16 match on Sunday.
Foden is just one of a number of England stars that have failed to replicate their club form at international level at the Euros.
Gareth Southgate’s men have progressed to the knockout stages at Group C winners but failed to live up to their hype as pre-tournament favourites in draws against Denmark and Slovenia after opening their campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia.
However, England have found themselves on the kinder side of the draw as they will avoid Germany, France, Spain and Portugal until the final if they progress that far.
Meanwhile, Daily Mail reports that Foden left camp to return home for birth of his third child with childhood sweetheart, Rebecca.
He is expected to be back with the group by Sunday when the team play next in the last 16.

I Did Nothing to Become World’s Best Player, It’s a Gift From God – Lionel Messi

Football star, Lionel Messi has revealed that God is the one behind his success and talent.
The Inter Miami and the Argentine national team, spoke when he was asked the reason behind his successful football career.

The 37-year-old football legend, currently with Argentina at the Copa América in the United States, shared his perspective on the origins of his exceptional talent.

Reflecting on his journey during an interview with podcaster Juan Pablo Varsky, Messi shared that he believes his extraordinary talent is a gift bestowed upon him by God.

“It’s very clear to me that I was born like this because God chose me. It was a gift he gave me.” he told podcaster Juan Pablo Varsky
“I was always different. People came to watch me. I didn’t realize it, but I only began to understand that as I grew older.

“Of course, I tried to take advantage of it [talent], I tried to squeeze the most out of it, but the truth is, I did nothing to become the player that I already was when I was little.”

Yes, Leo’s got a gift—one in a billion, no doubt. But he’s not giving himself enough credit because he worked just as hard as any other footballer to become what he is today—the best player in the world.
