Nigerian Immigration Warns Citizens Against Misusing American Visas

The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has issued an advisory, urging Nigerians to use their U.S. visas responsibly and in strict compliance with the stated purpose of their application.

This follows concerns raised by the U.S. Government over the misuse of visas by some Nigerian citizens.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer, SPR0, Akinsola Akinlabi, said Nigerians holding U.S. visas must adhere to the terms and conditions under which the visas were granted.

The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians.

“All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications.

“U.S. authorities conduct security screening beyond the initial point of entry into the country. Any breach of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation.

“Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel,” he said.

According to him, the U.S. remains committed to maintaining a secure and transparent visa process and expects all visa holders to comply fully with its immigration regulations.

He also advised Nigerian students in the U.S. to remain in active study programmes and refrain from unauthorised withdrawal or absenteeism.

He noted that such actions could result in visa cancellation and the loss of future eligibility for U.S. travel.

The NIS warned that the U.S. consular officers reserve the right to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of intending to travel for the purpose of giving birth, in a bid to secure U.S. citizenship for their children.

“The NIS will continue to collaborate with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions.

“We are calling on all Nigerian citizens to comply with U.S. visa rules as such conduct is essential to safeguarding legitimate travel opportunities,” he said.

Governor Adeleke dismisses talks of joining ADC, vows to run under PDP

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has firmly denied rumours suggesting he plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or collaborate with figures within the party ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor described the claims as baseless and misleading, reaffirming his full commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Our attention has been drawn to news reports and media enquiries about the imminent defection of Governor Adeleke to the ADC or alignment with ADC big wigs ahead of the 2026 governorship race. There is no truth in those publications and speculations,” the statement read.

Rasheed further clarified that there is no existing alliance or plan to work with the ADC, either directly or indirectly, emphasising that the governor will seek re-election under the PDP banner.

“First of all, we, the PDP Osun, have already adopted and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, so there is no alliance with ADC.

“Secondly, Governor Adeleke has no alliance with anyone in ADC. He remains in PDP, will run in PDP, and needs no alliance with ADC to win with a wide margin in 2026,” he stated.

He credited the governor’s rising popularity to his performance since assuming office, stating that Adeleke enjoys wide support from the Osun electorate due to his delivery of good governance and development-focused leadership.

“The Osun electorate supports Governor Adeleke because of his impressive performance since he came to office. That good work is still ongoing, and Osun people are committed to sustaining the delivery of good governance by re-electing Governor Adeleke in 2026,” Rasheed said.

The governor also called on PDP members and supporters in the state to remain focused and continue strengthening party structures at all levels as preparations intensify for next year’s election.

“Tinubu’s govt is performing but just don’t know how to communicate” – Ex-Niger Governor

Former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, has stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making progress but has failed to effectively communicate its accomplishments to the public.

Aliyu made this observation during an appearance on The Morning Show, a current affairs programme aired on Arise Television.

His comments were in response to the recent public accountability session held in Kaduna, where federal ministers and top government officials presented the administration’s performance to stakeholders from the North.

The session, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF), was aimed at addressing concerns raised by some northern political figures who claimed the region was being sidelined under Tinubu’s leadership. Aliyu currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the foundation.

Speaking on the discussions that took place during the Kaduna forum, Aliyu noted that several ministries and government agencies have recorded notable achievements, but poor communication has left the public largely unaware.

“What I understood from all the discussions that we’ve had is that the government officials are either shy or are not communicating well. You do not depend only on the Ministry of Information to be able to communicate with the citizens,” Aliyu said.

He emphasised the need for individual ministers and agency heads to actively engage the public and explain what they are doing, rather than relying solely on centralised communication channels.

Aliyu added that ongoing challenges such as insecurity, kidnapping, and poverty have also negatively affected public perception of the administration, even though progress is being made in some areas.

According to him, the government must adopt a more direct and people-focused approach to communication, rather than being overly concerned with political narratives.

He also backed calls from the North for greater inclusion and benefits, pointing out that a significant portion of the votes that brought Tinubu to power came from the region.

“If by what we say that 63 to 64 percent of the vote came from the North, it is only logical that the region would expect so much from the government,” Aliyu said. “But from what we have seen so far, the government is doing well — they just don’t know how to communicate very well.”

He urged the administration to become more transparent and deliberate in engaging with the Nigerian public to build trust and understanding across all regions.

ASUU-LASU Declares Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Lagos State University, LASU, chapter, has embarked on an indefinite strike action.
ASUU embarked on strike over alleged state government’s failure to implement the federal government-approved salary increment of 25 and 35 per cent for its members since January 2023.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the union’s Chairperson, Prof Ibrahim Bakare, and Secretary, Sylvester Idowu.
The union said the strike followed the refusal of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to implement the increase, noting that the increment has been implemented in all the federal universities and 18 state universities.
According to ASUU-LASU, the declaration of the strike was in conformity with the decision of the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of all the staff unions in the university, adding that a letter has been sent to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and governor Sanwo-Olu.
Recall that JAC comprises ASUU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.

The union is also calling on the Lagos State Government to harmonise its members’ salary scale with that of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH, and the Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, which it said, earn better than their counterparts in LASU.
It explained that the government has failed to implement the recommendation of a committee set up by the government on the harmonisation of salaries.
The unions also dismissed claims by the institution’s student leaders that only ASUU is embarking on strike, insisting that the action is total and involved other unions.

“We are aware that the state government and the university management are making frantic efforts to resolve the unfortunate development but until then, the strike will go on.

“We wish to remind them that students have no stake in the matter or possess any right to meddle into welfare issues involving staff members of the university and the government, and as such they should not allow themselves to be used in a matter that does not directly concern them,” the statement said.

ASUU-TSU Embarks On indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Taraba State University Chapter, ASUU-TSU has embarked on an indifinite strike.
ASUU-TSU said its members embarked on strike following the failure of the university management and the Taraba State government to resolve longstanding welfare and institutional challenges.
In a statement made available to journalists in Jalingo, the state capital on Wednesday, by the ASUU-TSU chairman, Dr Garba Mbave Joshua, the union explained that the strike became inevitable after the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted to the government, which ended on July 4, 2024.
The unresolved issues that prompted the industrial actions, as reeled out by the union leaders, include, the absence of a pension scheme, unpaid salary arrears,
Lack of a Governing Council, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances, EAA, exclusion from national minimum wage adjustments, and inadequate funding.
The union decried the lack of a functional pension scheme since the university’s inception, which it said threatens the future security of academic staff.

“Persistent delays in the payment of accumulated salary arrears have caused financial hardship for staff. Despite partial payments by the government, negotiations for the balance have collapsed.” Taraba ASUU said.
Disturbed that for over a year, the university has operated without a Governing Council, leaving critical decisions in limbo and affecting institutional management and the
academic staff, the union leaders said they “have been denied their entitlements dating back to the 2014/2015 academic session.

The union also accused the government of repeated but unfulfilled promises to address this issue.”
The union emphasized that it had made repeated efforts to engage with the government to resolve these issues. However, it said the lack of tangible action left it with no option but to take industrial action.
They called on stakeholders, including the public, to pressure the government to urgently address the issues, warning that the strike will continue until the demands are met.

“This action is in defence of our members’ welfare, the integrity of the institution, and the future of higher education in Taraba State,” the statement concluded.

US President, Joe Biden Pardons His Son, Hunter Biden Over Gun And Tax Offences Weeks Before Leaving Office

President of the United States of America, Joe Biden has granted pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who faced sentencing this month for federal tax and gun convictions as he prepares to leave office.

In a statement issued by the White House on Sunday, December 1, Biden said that his son had been “singled out” and “selectively, and unfairly” prosecuted due to his family name.

This official grant of clemency cannot be rescinded by President-elect Donald Trump.

Hunter Biden was scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 12 for his conviction on federal gun charges. He also was set to be sentenced on Dec. 16 in a separate criminal case in which he pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion charges in September.

“I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice — and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision,
” Biden said in his statement.

The president issued a “full and unconditional pardon” for any offenses Hunter Biden has “committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024,” according to the White House statement.

The president also spoke about his son’s struggles with addiction in his statement Sunday night, saying that his political opponents were trying to “break” him by going after Hunter.

“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” Biden said in his statement. “There has been an effort to break Hunter — who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me — and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”

In a separate statement, Hunter Biden said he had “admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction — mistakes that have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport.”

Despite all of this, I have maintained my sobriety for more than five years because of my deep faith and the unwavering love and support of my family and friends,” he added. “In the throes of addiction, I squandered many opportunities and advantages. In recovery we can be given the opportunity to make amends where possible and rebuild our lives if we never take for granted the mercy that we have been afforded. I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for President-elect Donald Trump, said, “The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system. That system of justice must be fixed and due process must be restored for all Americans, which is exactly what President Trump will do as he returns to the White House with an overwhelming mandate from the American people.”

I Didn’t Know Former Head Of State, Gowon Intervened To Spare My Life – Obasanjo Says

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his gratitude to General Yakubu Gowon for his support and intervention during Obasanjo’s imprisonment under General Sani Abacha’s regime.

We had reported on Friday that Gowon disclosed how he wrote to Abacha, pleading for Obasanjo’s life to be spared, a fact that Obasanjo was unaware of until Gowon revealed it at an interdenominational Christmas Carol organised by the Plateau State government.

Gowon had revealed that he wrote a letter to Abacha and sent it through his wife, Victoria, pleading for Obasanjo’s life to be spared.

However, on Saturday, Obasanjo expressed his gratitude to Gowon, acknowledging that he had been thanking those who had appealed for his release, but he was not aware of Gowon’s personal efforts.

While also commending Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State for organising the event, which brought people together in joyful worship, the former President emphasised the importance of faith and community in overcoming challenges.

He said, “I want to acknowledge my boss, General Yakubu Gowon. Yesterday, he gave us here a revelation, and I have to thank you especially for that. Because when I came out of prison, I had the opportunity, both while I was in prison and after my release, of hearing about friends inside and outside who contributed to appeals and prayed for my release.

“And I went around the world, thanking those who had been pointed out to me as having appealed and prayed for my release from prison. I did not know that you wrote a personal letter for my release until you said it yesterday. I thank you for that.”

Why We Broke Nigeria Into 12 States — Gowon Speaks

Former Head of State and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has explained his motivation for championing the creation of states in Nigeria during his tenure. He also called on Northern elites to foster consensus on issues that promote the overall interests of the nation.

He spoke when a delegation of the Senator Ibrahim Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats, LND, visited him yesterday at the Yakubu Gowon Centre, in Abuja.

Gowon who governed between 1966 and 1975, told his visitors that it was aimed at dousing tension and removing the fear of northern domination by other component parts of the federation.

According to him, “May I thank you sincerely, as a former governor and now the chairman-am I correct?-of the League of Northern Democrats. I hope you’re not suggesting that Baba Tafawa Balewa was not both a northern and a national democrat.

“I firmly believe, as I have always said, that the responsibility of maintaining Nigeria’s true democracy rests on the north, and Baba Tafawa Balewa embodied this ideal.

“Let me also say that I hope your visit is not just about returning to the old thinking where the north prioritises the north, the west prioritises the west, and the east prioritises the east-until, of course, the Mid-West emerged to think for itself.

“My position has always been that whatever the north does must serve the greater interest of Nigeria.
“From your speech, I understand that this is your intention-to ensure the north, in its current state, focuses on national unity.

“It was for this reason that I supported the creation of multiple states, to prevent any one region from becoming too powerful and threatening the country’s unity.

“This perspective was born out of extensive discussions with political leaders, chiefs, and various groups.

“The north had to make sacrifices to address fears of domination by one region, especially given the size and population of the north.

” At that time, there was considerable anxiety from the south about the north’s dominance, which nearly led to calls for secession from all regions-the west, the east, and even the north.

“This deeply worried me. I was born in Nigeria, raised in Nigeria, and served a profession that represented the country’s collective interest.

“My decision to advocate for states creation stemmed from a desire to prevent the fragmentation of our nation.

“Even now, I recall that at one point, people believed the north wanted to secede, just as similar claims were made about the east and the west. This fear of disintegration weighed heavily on me. If we had allowed it, what would we call ourselves today? We might have ended up with separate nations-whether Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or otherwise. I hesitate to say more, as I might risk offending someone here.”

Why I opted out of partisan politics

“You know I’m not affiliated with any political party. My only allegiance is to Nigeria. My profession shaped my belief in serving the country above all else, and I’ve avoided partisan politics.

“I encourage others to think beyond regional interests and focus on Nigeria as a whole. Differences in opinion are natural, but they should never prevent us from working together to resolve issues for the good of the country.

“Nigeria’s population and diversity are strengths. If we can unite despite our differences, we can build the Nigeria we all envision. You have shared your paper with me, and I’ll review it carefully. As you mentioned, you can return at any time for further discussions or my thoughts on your proposals.

“I joked earlier that your League of Northern Democrats isn’t yet a party. It appears to be a northern group, but it’s made up of individuals from all parts of the country.

“The north is incredibly diverse, encompassing various tribes, such as the Igbo-speaking communities in Benue and the Yoruba presence there as well. These differences enrich our region and should encourage unity rather than division.

“The northern identity, however, is often associated with the Hausa-Fulani. Even within that label, there is significant diversity. For instance, among the Angas people, we have distinct names like “Ngas,” and they call us “Ngali.” The cultural nuances are fascinating and a testament to our rich heritage.”

“Unfortunately, I feel saddened by the challenges currently facing the north, such as the emergence of groups like the Lukurawa from Mali. Their activities have only created more problems for us.

“Nonetheless, I’m honoured and delighted by your visit. Your introductions touched me deeply. Many of you are descendants of respected leaders such as Tafawa Balewa and Shagari. I see this gathering as a continuation of their legacy.

“I must commend your group’s efforts to bring over 700 members together. It’s a remarkable achievement. However, I urge you to remember that the north’s division into states was meant to preserve national unity.

“Whatever you do, always prioritise the nation’s interest. While cooperation among states is vital, it should never compromise Nigeria’s collective good.

“I’m impressed by your initiative and wish you success. Perhaps your movement will evolve into a national party that unites all Nigerians. While various groups work on a new constitution, I encourage you to engage with them to ensure their proposals serve the country’s best interests.

“I’ve always believed in taking the best from all ideologies-be it socialism, capitalism, or others-and applying them for the greater good.

“During my time in government, we valued diverse perspectives, but decisions were always made in the interest of the people and the nation.

“You’ve started something significant, and I hope you’re prepared to collaborate with others for the future of Nigeria. Your dedication gives me hope for the nation’s future.

Earlier, the Chairman of the LND, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, described Gowon as a symbol of Nigeria’s unity, strength and resilience.

While congratulating the retired general on his 90th birthday, he prayed for his continued health and strength to contribute to national development.

Explaining the desire behind the formation of the LND, Shekarau said, “Your Excellency, the League of Northern Democrats was born out of a shared sense of urgency and responsibility among Northern elites to address the critical challenges facing our region.

“Together, we seek to reposition the North as a bastion of political, economic and cultural influence – a North that reclaims its historical role as a beacon of leadership in Nigeria!
