Popular Nigerian skit maker, Debo Adebayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, has recounted his harrowing encounter with the police after he was arrested in February 2021.
He stated that a Police officer threatened to kill him if he was not popular.
Macaroni made this known while reacting to the suspension of Wale Ajetunmobi, Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Ajetunmobi had claimed in a now-deleted post on Sunday that some arsonists who burnt down Television Continental (TVC) during the #EndSARS protests in the state had been hunted and executed.
The statement stirred controversy, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough probe.
In a post via his X handle, Mr Macaroni stated that there was no investigation over the threat to kill him while in police custody and no action was taken when some people were openly threatening and intimidating voters before the 2023 election.
He also cited another media aide to Sanwo-Olu, who took bigotry to the streets and was never condemned, adding that the call for Ajetunmobi’s probe will not yield results.
He wrote, “Media aide to Governor Babajide SanwoOlu has stated according to Facts available to him that some Nigerians were hunted down and executed October 2020. Wein ll, Story Time; February 2021 when some of us, were arrested and dehumanized by Criminals disguised as Police Officers, one said to me : “Olorun yo iya e pe o Loruko. A ba ti fi Emi yin sofo danu… E fe ma da Ijoba lamu abi.. o je fun ara e ni brain”
Translation: “God save your mama say you get name. We for don waste all of una for here.. na una wan dey worry govt ba? You better give yourself brain”
“This was never investigated. But why would it be? Why investigate the dehumanization or supposed intimidation that is supposed to work in your favor? Before and after Elections, we had people come out with their full chest, with weapons.. threatening and intimidating voters. No action was taken!!! But why? Why take action against an oppression tactics that works for you?
“There was another media aide of the Governor that left the media and proudly took bigotry to the streets. That act and many more of such was never condemned and discouraged!!! Of course, anything to Win!!!
“We have allowed politicians who do not give a damn about us use their sycophants to sow seeds of hate amongst us . We can no longer engage ourselves without diatribe. Bigotry has become the order of the day. Shame to everyone involved! It doesn’t matter where you are from!! Wether North, South, East or West… Shame!!!
“I would say that I hope this statement by the media aide to the Governor is investigated but I laugh at the thought of it. I laugh in the last investigation panel set up by the Lagos State Government itself. We all know how that ended.. don’t we? LOL”
