Loss Of Music With Morals, Accelerated Decadence In Nigeria – Spyro

Oludipe David, the Nigerian singer, who is popularly known as Spyro, has asserted that music has lost its original value.

“In as much as vibes are cool, I feel like music has lost its intrinsic value. Back then, you would get goosebumps listening to music. Vibes are cool. But how can we infused messages, values into vibes?

“A lot of the decadence that we have in the society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value. We are now just singing for money. A lot of us are into the business for money, not to make impact.”

According to him, they are only coming to “kill, steal, and destroy”.
The singer urged all Nigerians, including celebrities, to ensure that the country does not descend into war.

“WAR in a country threatens everyone. Guess what superstar, every surviving person will be too busy looking for what to eat and no one will have time to listen to music, watch movies/ contents,go to Church/ Mosque, talkless do business.

Christians Are Biggest Problem I’ve Ever Had In This Industry – Spyro

Nigerian singer Oludipe aka Spyro has opened that Christians are his biggest problem in the music industry.
He stated this during an interview with Frank Edoho.
The 35-year-old artiste, who began singing as a teenager in his church choir, rose to prominence in 2022 following the release of his breakout hit “Billing” four years after launching his professional career in 2017.
Speaking about his issues with Christians, he said: “The biggest problem I have ever had in this industry so far is the Christians, not even the Muslims. I was shocked when I came into the industry because in my own head, I’m like, we are family. So when they started giving me, you wear earrings and this and that. I personally believe that. How do we reach the people outside if we are not with them? The Bible says, ‘Go ye into the world.’

“It didn’t say stay in the church. Go into the world and preach the gospel. So many of my words were twisted to make me look like the devil. I went for interviews where my sentences were chopped. They were paraphrased out of context. I’ve noticed that people don’t have issues with every other thing, but once you come out and you mention this Jesus, there’s always a problem with it.”

The singer explained that following the backlash, he realised people often take issue with anyone who publicly preaches about Jesus.

He further revealed that some Christians had even threatened to ruin his career, among other acts of hostility.
“I’ve noticed that everyone who has stood up to say Jesus, there’s always a problem, which makes me feel like there has to be something to this Jesus. Because if you come out and you say you’re a Buddhist now, nobody fights you, but immediately you come out and you start talking about Christ. So that was the point where my eyes were now opened. Well, I think I’m in for it. I’m here to stay, irrespective of all the threatening messages of ‘we’ll cancel you, we’ll do this, we’ll do that.’

“I’m like, you didn’t bring me here. God brought me here, and he’s going to sustain me. The Bible says that to be loved, I wish that thou mayest prosper and be healthy. It says God can make all grace abound unto you. You have all sufficiency and all things shall abide unto every good work. So God is interested in your prosperity. The earth is the Lord and the fullness thereof. So, if the earth is the Lord and the fullness thereof, then I should be having the best”, he added.
He said, “Christ is better preached in a G-Wagon. Christ is better preached in a Lamborghini. The gospel of Christ. That’s lifestyle evangelism. That’s his testimony. I’m not saying that if you’re poor, you can’t preach Christ.

“I’ve been able to drag a lot of people to Christ. Because coming down from a G-Wagon and saying Jesus is Lord. It’d be like this. I didn’t like them (diamonds, etc) before, but I had to make it a duty to do them. To show people that you can be in Christ and be successful.”

“I don’t have problems deciding where to draw the line between gospel and secular music, but unfortunately, it feels like the audience has that problem on my behalf. I don’t have any trouble being an Afro-pop R&B artist and being a Christian, because they are two different things. I’m a Christian, but my work is as a singer. So in my space, I can use my platform to discuss my faith. Not everybody will be on the pulpit to preach the gospel. Sometimes, you must go into the community and try to get people.

“I keep saying this all the time, that the Christianity that we are all doing today is a product of a politician, Joseph of Arimathea, who had access to Pilate. Because he had access to Pilate and requested the body of Christ while he was on the cross. At the same time, he was on the cross. If His legs were to be broken, because normally in those days, once you’re on the cross and they break your leg, it means you’re a thief”, said the “No Gree For Anybody (NGFA)” crooner.
“So it was a normal person, Joseph of Arimathea, who went to Pilate and said, ‘Give me the body of this man.’ He was the one who did a proper burial for Christ. Jesus had to die three days and be resurrected on the third day for the scriptures to be fulfilled. He was a mere politician who just had power. So, Jesus needs, until today, full soldiers in every industry.

“Of course, people are just being hypocritical because you don’t go to the bank and say, ‘Give me gospel money, give me Jesus money.’ If we do not enter these sectors to influence them, other people will go there. That’s why we have people doing drugs everywhere now, and no one is talking about it. And if people are out there doing drugs, the level of promiscuity is on another level. Christians are still hiding.”

I Rely On Prayer to Succeed After Releasing New Song – Spyro

Afrobeats Singer Spyro has revealed that he prays and relies on God before and after releasing a song.
He stated this during a recent interview with Frank Edoho.
Spyro stated that before releasing a song, he seeks divine guidance through prayer to ensure its success, given the costly nature of the music industry.
He said, “I think I do my things differently. Because the first thing I want to do when I want to drop a song for this project is to go into prayers because I always want to know. You know this industry is quite expensive to promote music. I know”.

Spyro explained that promoting a single track can cost hundreds of millions of naira.
He further said, shooting a high-quality music video, like his song ‘Shut Down’, cost him over 40 million naira.
The ‘Who Is Your Guy’ crooner said the additional expenses include airplay on radio stations and, most significantly, social media promotion.

“You’re talking of hundreds of millions sometimes for just a song. I mean, to shoot a proper video now, you’re talking 20, 30 million, 40 million. I shot ‘Shut Down’ for 40 something million. I also spend money on putting the songs on the radio”, he added.

He highlighted the high costs of paying influencers on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, as well as running sponsored ads, noting that Instagram ads were particularly expensive in the past.
“The one that carries the whole money is social media. Yeah, because you’re paying TikTok and Instagram influencers. You’re doing sponsored ads.

“So, aside from that, you go to, you go to Instagram, you pump money there, you do sponsored ads, you know. I think, I don’t know about now, Instagram even used to be much more expensive than TikTok then, as at the last time”, he said.
To manage these costs, Spyro said he built a network of industry friends who support each other, reducing the need for heavy spending.
He mentioned that this collaborative approach has helped him cut down on expenses over time.
“Because now I’ve built a network of friends, guys in the industry that we do things for ourselves that don’t have to spend that much. So I invested in friendships, you know, in this space. So I turn up for them, they turn up for me.

“So that is why I do not know how much now on Instagram again, but I know I used to spend a lot of money on Instagram back then”, he said.

Spyro added that when deciding which song to release, he relies on spiritual direction.

“So when I want to drop a song, I don’t want to miss it. You know, so I usually like to go to God and be like, God, directs me, just let me know.

“You know, and people think that God is not interested in things like that, but he’s very, very interested. So show me, tell me, you know. So the first song I’m going to push on this album, for example, was, it was directly from God.

“Like I woke up to the song, you know, I woke up to it and immediately I picked up my phone. I called my producer. I said, I’m coming to record a song this morning as early as 6.30, you know.

“And the funny thing was that on getting to the studio, I’m like, why did you agree to record a song for me this early? And you are here. He said, ah, he even played game till morning. But someone called him, someone that usually doesn’t talk to him, just called him and says, Spyro is going to come and do a song in your studio this week. Put your life into it”, he added.

His words …

“Yesterday I lost every ounce of STEEZE and composure as Faze came to my house. I don’t even know how to express the feeling. When he left I started playing old songs and I lost it, I cried like a baby. Those were the songs that formed me, songs that moved my depth.
This is what I feel the new generation music lacks, which is what I am trying to bring back with my new Album THE MEN, THE BOYS AND YOUR GUY. “
