AFCONQ 2025: He Was Tormenting Them – Eguavoen On Substituting Chukwueze Against Rwanda

Augustine Eguavoen, the interim Super Eagles coach, has opened up on why he substituted Samuel Chukwueze during the second half of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifying match against Rwanda on Tuesday.

Chukwueze was brought off at halftime, with Moses Simon taking his place.

Speaking at his post-match interview, Eguavoen said the AC Milan winger had to be replaced because he had a yellow card and was tormenting the hosts.

“He [Chukwueze] is very good, he’s one of our good players. Today, we came up with a strategy, he got a yellow card and he was tormenting you [Rwanda] guys,” Eguavoen told reporters.

“We had three players on yellow cards so it’s kind of a risk also. We have to make some substitutions and we have players who can go forward also.

“We thought Chukwueze should rest not because he’s not playing well but because of the risk of getting a second yellow card.”

My Mother Still Wants Me To Study Medicine – Super Eagles Star, Chukwueze Reveals

Samuel Chukwueze, the Super Eagles forward, has disclosed that his mother still desires him to pursue a career in medicine or pharmacy, despite his success in football, according to Soccernet.ng.

He said: “My mom did not want me to play football. In Africa, everyone focuses on school, and she used to say ‘football will never make you money,” Chukwueze said, per football Italia.

“But I was born with football inside me. I would play until seven in the evening, and when I came home, she would punish me. She would take my football shoes and confiscate them, so I had to hide them.

“The problem was she always found them. Once, she burned my shoes and shirts and told me, ‘Samuel, you need to focus on your studies.’ I tried, but a part of me was switched off.”

Although his mother is highly supportive of him, Chukwueze admits that she still wants him to study and become a medical doctor.

“The funny thing is, in Africa, you don’t change your mind. She still wants me to study, wants me to be a doctor, maybe a doctor in football. I wanted to be a lawyer, but she said, ‘No, no, doctor. You need to study pharmacy,”Chukwueze added.

Why I Rejected Lucrative Saudi Offer — Chukwueze Reveals

Samuel Chukwueze, the Nigerian winger, has revealed the reason behind his decision to snub a move to Saudi Arabia last summer.

Chukwueze was approached by a number of clubs in the Asian country after the end of the 2022/23 season.

The 25-year-old however decided against accepting the tempting offer despite plea fron his manager.

Instead, the talented winger joined Serie A giants, AC Milan ending his five-year stay with LaLiga club, Villarreal.

“If money were a problem, I would have signed in Saudi Arabia. They wanted me a year ago,” the 25-year-old was quoted by Football Italia.

”My mind was set only on Milan. My agent told me, ‘Hey, look, there’s this money…’ But I said no: ‘I don’t want to go anywhere else.’

“So he gave up. If that money comes, it comes. The most important thing now is to believe in myself; I’m still young, I want to make it, I need to stay in Europe.”

Chukwueze scored once in 24 league appearances for AC Milan last season.

Villarreal Place €80 Million Price Tag On Chukwueze

A price tag of €80 million has been placed on Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze by his club Villarreal ahead of this summer transfer window.
This is as Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid have shown interest in Chukwueze and are aiming to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 23-year-old’s performance this season has delighted Florentino Pérez, president of Los Blancos.
Last Saturday, Chukwueze put on a masterful performance at the Bernabeu, handing the Spanish powerhouses their fifth loss of the season while scoring twice and helping to set up the third in a 3-2 thriller.
The Super Eagles winger is so crucial to Villarreal’s success that he has started the team’s last 20 games and is now their most effective player in Gerard Moreno’s absence, whose season has been marred by injuries.
This season, the 23-year-old has scored 11 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions. He is one of only five Spanish top-flight players to have double-digit goals and assists since 2022.
The Nigerian has improved so well under coach Quique Setién this season that he could move to Real Madrid this summer if they agree to pay Villarreal’s asking price.
Villarreal reportedly informed Real Madrid and other interested clubs to meet Chukwueze’s €80 million release clause according to Spanish transfer market website Fichajes.
The website wrote, “From Villarreal, they have wanted to be blunt with the starting price of Chukwueze, clinging to the player’s termination clause, which amounts to no more and no less than €80m, which means that any team interested in signing him will have to pay that amount to secure his services, including a Real Madrid that has not yet made a formal offer”.
