Olusegun Obasanjo, a former President of Nigeria, has refuted the claims that he met President Bola Tinubu in Abeokuta on Thursday.
A viral video surfaced on the social media where it was alleged that Obasanjo and Tinubu met at the 80th birthday of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo and promised to work for him if he offered him a job.
Reacting to the viral video on Saturday, Obasanjo described the video as fake, disjointed and sickening.
In a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo condemned the video, saying the banter conversation took place between him and Tinubu when he played host to the former Lagos State governor in 2022, before the country’s 2023 general elections.
The statement quoted Obasanjo as saying that, “one, I have not seen Bola Tinubu since he visited me in my house in Abeokuta, when he was campaigning. Secondly, I was at the church and not the reception for Alake’s 80th birthday reception.”
The statement explained further that, “during Tinubu’s visit to his house last year, he met the former President playing his favorite traditional game (ayo) and he started the banter, jokingly telling the former President that, he was shocked to see him playing the Ayo game at that time of the day.
“Spontaneously, as he was getting up from his chair to welcome him and other accompanying visitors, Obasanjo responded: “when I don’t have job. If you are ready to give me job, I am ready to do it.”
This, Akinyemi said, was contrary to the meaning the viral video is putting out.
Akinyemi quoted Obasanjo as saying that, “I am not looking for work and I am not working with anyone as the fake news puts out. Those who are looking for people to work with Bola Tinubu should look outside Obasanjo.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that Nigerians are not lazy people and have no reason to be poor.
He said this in Abuja on Thursday, September 14, when he received a high-powered 62-man delegation comprising leaders from both the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
A statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelali, quoted the President as saying;
“We are not lazy people. We are richly endowed. We just need to be our brother’s keeper, and good neighbours to one another. I am not a President that will give excuses. I will work hard for our nation with purpose, determination, and dedication to create wealth for all Nigerians. We have no reason to be poor! We will not look back, we will run aggressively forward.
Today, we may be swimming against the tide. But the waves will soon propel us forward from behind. We will achieve the goals and dreams of our forefathers. I am inspired by the nation of people I now lead” he said
The Nigerian leader who said people trust him to turn the tide, assured of his government’s resolve to fulfill its promises to the country.
“I am the Captain and Chief Salesman of the country. We have to reverse the trend and achieve possibilities within a short period of time,” President Tinubu said. “Our people have high expectations for us. I pledge to work hard, and I pray to God to put me on the right path, not to disappoint Nigerians.”the statement read
Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu has arrived in the nation’s capital, after a week away from the country.
The president had embarked on a working visit to New Delhi in India for the G20 Summit and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a diplomatic intervention.
While in UAE, the Nigerian leader met with his counterpart, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and finalised a historic agreement, which has resulted in the immediate cessation of the visa ban placed on Nigerian travellers.
Furthermore, by this historic agreement, both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines are to immediately resume flight schedules into and out of Nigeria, without any further delay.
As negotiated between the two Heads of State, this immediate restoration of flight activity, through these two airlines and between the two countries, does not involve any immediate payment by the Nigerian government.
In recognition of President Tinubu’s economic development diplomacy drive and proposals, an agreed framework has been established, which will involve several billions of U.S. dollars worth of new investments into the Nigerian economy across multiple sectors, including defence, agriculture and others, by the investment arms of the UAE government.
Additionally, President Tinubu is pleased to have successfully negotiated a joint, new foreign exchange liquidity programme between the two Governments, which will be announced in detail in the coming weeks.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi has said that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election would fail if he appeals the verdict of the Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) at the Supreme Court, which affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s win.
Recall that on Wednesday, September 6, the tribunal dismissed Peter Obi’s petition on grounds that it lacked merit. In a press conference he held on Thursday, September 7, Obi rejected the judgement and said he would be appealing it.
While speaking with newsmen in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital on Saturday, September 9, Umahi urged Obi not to appeal against the tribunal judgement, arguing that his appeal would also be thrown out by the Supreme Court.
“Throughout the campaign period and even now, I keep saying it boldly that God told me that Tinubu will be President of Nigeria. It was tough here in South East but I am very happy that Tinubu eventually became the President of this country. Like I said in Imo State, God has a purpose for everybody. There was John the Baptist, there was Christ and there is still Christ. Peter Obi has served the purpose of John the Baptist for the Divine President Bola Tinubu Ahmed, that’s all that God brought him to do this time around.
So, I advise him not to go to any court of appeal. I am not a Lawyer but the Governor of Ebonyi State is a Lawyer and he has interpreted the judgment and it has left no hope for any appeal. Those judges are spirits. They went into everything and dissected them just like getting a coconut and breaking it. You will get the water and everything and get the nut.
So, I advise him not to go to appeal, he is not even 2nd, he came 3rd at the election. he is our brother. Let South Eastern people come together to support President Tinubu. He made us the number one Minister even when we didn’t vote very well for him.
But we voted even very well more than other regions because through the calling of John the Baptist, we were able to bring down PDP and that is a victory for APC”.
Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, President Bola Tinubu is meeting with a delegation of Nigerian Muslim leaders (Ulama) led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, in Aso Rock, Abuja.
Recall that a group of Islamic leaders had recently offered to interface with the coup leaders in Niger Republic on behalf of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, and they got the approval from President Tinubu.
They were in Niger to interact with the junta’s head, General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
The Islamic clerics had advised against the use of military force by ECOWAS.
President Tinubu is the Chairman of the ECOWAS’ Authority of Heads of State and Government and it’s expected that the Islamic leaders will brief the President on the outcome of their interactions with the military junta as well as their colleagues in Niger Republic as regards the political crisis
The ECOWAS had taken steps to show its disapproval of the military take over of power in Niger by imposing a series of sanctions and an ultimatum, which the body threatened could lead to an armed response.
ECOWAS has insisted that the military junta should reinstate the democratically-elected President.
The Ulama are opposed to war with the Nigerien military, as threatened by ECOWAS.
They said that apart from the dire consequences of armed conflict, they were enjoined by their religious faith and the Quran to seek mediation first in cases like this before resorting to war.
