Mohbad’s Family Demands Fresh Probe, Bars Wife From Using Surname

The family of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has reiterated its demand for a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his de@th.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the head of the family, Omolayo Aloba, and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, sent to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, the family also directed the late singer’s partner, Wunmi Adebanjo, to stop using the family surname, Aloba, pending the outcome of a court-ordered DNA test.

According to the statement, the family said it remained resolute in its demand for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s de@th, adding that it had appointed new legal counsel for all estate and DNA-related matters.

The statement partly read, “The Aloba family remains resolute in its demand for a transparent, independent, and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s de@th. The family is committed to seeing that justice is served, the truth uncovered, and those responsible held accountable.”

“The Aloba family has unanimously appointed Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., of Ogungbe & Ogungbe Attorneys, as the sole and official legal representative of the family in all matters relating to the DNA case and the estate of the late Ilerioluwa Aloba (popularly known as Mohbad).

“Furthermore, the family has also unanimously agreed that Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN, of Wahab Shittu, SAN & Co., shall continue to represent the family in all engagements and communications with investigative authorities concerning the ongoing inquiry into the cause of de@th of the late Ilerioluwa Aloba (Mohbad),” the statement added.

Addressing matters concerning Mohbad’s estate, the family named three administrators to manage the deceased’s assets, royalties, and intellectual property.

They identified the administrators as Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba.

“These administrators are authorised to immediately apply for letters of administration from the probate registry to lawfully manage all estate assets, including royalties, bank holdings, real and personal property, and musical intellectual property. The family has left one slot open for Wunmi Adebanjo to join the administrators if and when a valid court-ordered DNA test confirms that Liam is the biological son of the late Mohbad,”
the statement added.

The family further requested that Wunmi Adebanjo, identified as the deceased’s partner, cease using the surname Aloba in public or private records until lawful confirmation of paternity is obtained and the family gives approval.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed,”
the statement disclosed.

The family added that if the DNA result confirms that the deceased fathered the child, Liam, both mother and child would be recognised within the estate administration process.

It, however, appealed to the public to remain calm and respect the judicial process, noting that the DNA verification was not intended to vilify anyone but to ensure legal clarity and fairness in the distribution of the estate. The statement also noted that a new burial and memorial date would be announced once legal and family matters are concluded.

“The family will announce a new burial date and memorial plan for Mohbad in due course after the completion of all internal and legal formalities on the DNA matter. Justice for Mohbad remains our unwavering goal, and we will continue to pursue it through lawful and peaceful means,” the statement read.

When contacted for a reaction on Wednesday, the legal representative of the late singer’s wife, Kabir Akingbolu, faulted the Aloba family’s directive restraining his client, Wunmi, from using her late husband’s surname.

Akingbolu, who represents Wunmi in the ongoing paternity and estate-related proceedings, said the family’s statement was another attempt to mislead the public despite several court-backed opportunities to conduct the DNA test they requested.

Akingbolu further explained that after the initial court order, the Aloba family allegedly withdrew from the process and changed legal representatives multiple times.

He said, “They were the ones who went to court to demand a DNA test. The court granted the order, but they refused to show up. We wrote four different letters to them, and they never came. They later came back with a new lawyer and asked that the DNA be done outside the country.

“The court again granted the order, yet they disappeared. Now, for the third time, they’ve filed another application, saying they want it done in a particular hospital abroad. We will not allow that because you cannot choose a hospital for the court. We are ready for the DNA any time, any day. The child is not a bastard, and my client has nothing to fear; she is a decent woman.”

Reacting to the family’s demand that Wunmi stop using the Aloba surname, Akingbolu dismissed it as illegal and sentimental.

He also cited constitutional backing for her right to continue bearing the name.

He said, “Nobody can stop her from bearing Aloba. That is the name given to her by her husband, and under the law, she has every right to keep it. The Supreme Court, in the case of Ojukwu vs Ojukwu, held that no one has a monopoly over a surname. There are thousands of Alobas in the world. They are the ones running from the DNA. We have always been ready — even if it’s today or tomorrow, we’ll be there,” Akingbolu added.

The development is the latest in the ongoing dispute between the family of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, and his widow, Wunmi, over the paternity of their son and the control of the singer’s estate.

Mohbad d!ed at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, with the circumstances surrounding his de@th sparking controversies on social media.

Being a former signee of Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, Mohbad left the label in February 2022. The Lagos State Police Command had, on September 18, 2023, inaugurated a 13-man special investigation team to probe the singer’s de@th.

PUNCH had earlier reported in 2024 that Mohbad’s father, through the family’s legal representatives, filed an application at the coroner’s court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State, seeking to unravel the cause of the singer’s de@th and later demanded a DNA test to resolve the paternity dispute surrounding the child.

Mohbad’s Wife, Wunmi Reacts as SAN Withdraws From DNA Case

Wunmi Aloba, wife of late singer, Mohbad has broken her silence after a Senior Advocate Nigeria employed in her DNA case by her father-in-law resigned

The decision of the lawyer to withdraw from the case has shocked Nigerians as this wouldn’t be the first time, a lawyer will be withdrawing from the case.

Wunmi while reacting on her Instagram story, told her father-in-law that a DNA result can never be manipulated.
Her words: “Another lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has withdrawn from the DNA case. To my father-in-law, you can get as many lawyers as you want from anywhere in the world; one thing is certain, however, that you can’t manipulate this DNA. I’m sorry.

A whole SAN.
When people are confident in truth, they don’t run. They don’t hide. They don’t switch lawyers every month. They don’t ignore court calls.

We have cooperated from Day 1. We have never opposed a DNA test. We showed up. We waited. We followed the law.

The only people delaying the process are the same people who requested it.

No one can manipulate the court, and no one can manipulate science.

Let the truth speak – for Liam, for Mohbad, and for justice.
November 11 is around the corner. We will be there. Again”.

Mohbad’s Father Demands Prosecution Of Daughter In Law, Auxiliary Nurse, Others

Joseph Aloba, father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called on the Lagos State Government to prosecute his son’s widow, Omowunmi Aloba, along with others indicted by the Coroner’s Inquest into the artist’s de@th.

The demand was contained in a petition addressed to the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, and signed by Aloba’s legal counsel, Wahab Shittu SAN.

In the letter, Aloba specifically called for the prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to the singer shortly before his de@th in September 2023.

He also requested that other individuals present in Mohbad’s apartment at the time, particularly those who invited the nurse or failed to seek immediate medical help, to be brought to justice.

The petition referenced the Coroner’s verdict delivered in July 2025 by Magistrate Taofikat Shotobi, who found the nurse’s actions both “unlawful and professionally negligent”, citing her administration of injection without a doctor’s prescription.

Magistrate Shotobi further faulted Mohbad’s wife for opting to treat her husband at home rather than taking him to a medical facility.

Despite these findings, Aloba’s lawyer, Shittu expressed concern that more than two months after the Coroner’s report, the Lagos State Government has yet to initiate criminal proceedings against the indicted parties.

“Our client, as a bereaved father who seeks justice, is deeply troubled by the fact that, despite the clear indictments contained in the Coroner’s verdict, no prosecutorial steps have been taken since July 11, 2025,”
the letter read in part.

The lawyer urged the Attorney-General to commence prosecution within 14 days, given the high sensitivity as well as the public interest surrounding the case.

Shittu further requested that if the state declines to act, the Attorney-General should grant his legal team a formal authorization to prosecute the matter on behalf of the state under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State.

Mohbad was using Wunmi’s mom’s account number to receive money – Naira Marley

Marlian Records boss, Naira Marley, has revealed new details about late singer Mohbad’s financial transactions during his time under the label, alleging that the artiste frequently used his partner’s mother’s account to receive payments.

Speaking in a recent interview, Naira Marley recounted how Mohbad first reached out to him on November 16, 2020, claiming he was receiving treatment for malaria at a hospital.

According to him, on December 21, 2020, Mohbad sent an account number with the name Adesanya Justina Olajumoke and insisted that payments should be made into it.

He further disclosed that on December 30, 2020, Mohbad expressed gratitude after receiving payments into the same account following his one-year anniversary as a Marlian Records artiste.

Again, on December 31, 2020, and January 25, 2021, Mohbad continued to direct him to send money to the same account, claiming it belonged to his mother.

However, Naira Marley said he became suspicious after realizing the name on the account did not match that of Mohbad’s mother, who is known as Abosede. He alleged that the account actually belonged to the mother of Mohbad’s partner, Wunmi.

He said …

“On November 16, 2020, he sent me a message that he was at the hospital treating malaria. Those people saying he is scared of the hospital can see this.

“On Dec 21, 2020, Mohbad sent me an account with the name: Adesanya Justina Olajumoke. He said that was his new account where money should be paid into.”

“I was like this is not your account but anyway I paid his money there. On Dec 30, 2020 he appreciated me after his one year anniversary of being my artiste.”

On Dec 31, 2020, he sent me the same Olajumoke account to pay money into and he still insisted it was his account. On Jan 25, 2021 he sent me that same Olajumoke account and said it was his mum’s account.”

“I knew that wasn’t his mum’s name.”It was Wunmi’s mother’s account. His mother’s name is Abosede. I was like what’s going on, I then called him over to my place and spoke to him.”

Liam misses you too. I wish you were here to see him; you would have been an incredible father. I still don’t know how I’ve survived without you. God, I wish you were here every single day-every millisecond of the day. Your passing brought me unbearable pain, but it has also shaped me. I’ve learned so much, and I’m still learning. I’ll never be okay with you not being here; it messes with my head. I keep thinking it’s a nightmare I’ll wake up from, but 366 days have passed, and I haven’t. Oko mi, we had so many plans together, and you had so much more to give to this world. It hurts deeply to know that all our dreams, everything you worked so hard for, are now gone with you. I want you to know that Liam and I are holding on to the strength and love you gave us. Every day, I see pieces of you in him-your kindness, your smile, your spirit. I promise to raise him with the same love and care you would have given him, keeping your memory alive in every step of his life. But today, I choose to celebrate you. Today, I choose to honor your legacy. Today, I choose to give all glory to God for blessing me with you, llerioluwa. Today, I choose to be grateful for the gift of Liam-the beauty for our ashes. My love, I pray for your soul today. I ask that God forgives you of all your shortcomings and welcomes you to rest at His right hand. I hope it’s always a celebration up there for you. I love you so much. Thank you for Liam-I’m forever grateful for the gift of him! Fly high with the angels, love of my life.”
