2027: Peter Obi Set To Officially Announce Defection To ADC

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is reportedly set to officially join the African Democratic Congress, following ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A principal official of the party in Abuja told Sunday PUNCH that Obi had concluded plans to join the party and hold a declaration rally in Enugu, the political capital of the South-East, on December 31.

According to the official, Obi’s supporters and loyalists have begun arrangements for the defection.

The source disclosed that Obi, after the ADC asked him to make up his mind on joining the party about three weeks ago, met with the National Chairman of the party, David Mark, to renew his allegiance to the coalition.

He said the party’s position might have convinced the former Anambra State governor to finally decide to join the ADC.

On December 7, the ADC, while reacting to a statement credited to Obi in which he described the party as unstable, told the presidential hopeful to make up his mind on whether or not to join the coalition.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, the party source said, “We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu. Although he has yet to formally inform the party, the plans are genuine.”

Asked why Obi would prefer to declare for the coalition in Enugu instead of Anambra, his home state, the party official said, “Enugu is the political capital of the South-East. Obi is representing the region, not just his state. That must have informed his decision.”

But the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said he could not confirm Obi’s planned defection.

“The point is that there is no official announcement yet. But consultations are ongoing,”
he said.

Similarly, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, declined to comment directly on the matter, insisting that only Obi could speak on it.

But the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party has downplayed Obi’s planned defection.

The National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, said the party would refrain from making any definitive pronouncement on the matter until Obi personally speaks on it.

He said, “We cannot fully comment on that until we hear from Obi. As we normally say, anybody can defect from anywhere to anywhere. It is normal in Nigerian politics. Labour Party doesn’t see it as a big deal.”

According to Ifoh, any decision by Obi to leave the party would be driven by personal ambition rather than institutional failure, adding that the Labour Party would continue to thrive regardless.

While reiterating that the party harboured no ill feelings, the LP spokesman said it would have been preferable for Obi to remain within the fold and work through any disagreements internally.

He said, “But the wisest thing for him to do is to stay back and work with the party that gave him the spread he got in 2023. He should try to reconcile with the party leadership and move on from there. But if he prefers to jump from one party to another, we wish him all the best.”

2027: Forcing Peter Obi To Withdraw Will Take Away The Hope Of Nigerians – Labour Party

The Labour Party (LP) has addressed ongoing discussions about potential alliances with opposition parties and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The LP’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, in an interview with Punch, dismissed speculation that Peter Obi could step down for any political coalition or rival aspirant.

According to Akeni, forcing Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 race will amount to betraying the hopes of millions of Nigerians seeking change.

He maintained that neither Peter Obi nor the Obidient Movement would surrender their presidential bid, stressing that “our motto is forward never, backward never.”

He added, “Forcing Peter Obi to withdraw from the race is to take away 90 per cent of the hope of Nigerians for redemption and a new beginning.

“So, I see a situation where we will all come together, stakeholders, and take the right decision at the right time. And that right time is still a little bit far away. It’s going to be close to the primaries.

“There is no substitute for the ideology of the Labour Party. And so, we are going head on for the presidency if the right decision is not taken by the coalition.”

Akeni also appealed to Atiku to prove his love for the country by doing the right thing and giving Peter Obi a chance in 2027.

He said, “Let Atiku think of what is best for his epitaph. Would he like to be remembered as the man who sacrificed Nigeria for his ambition, yet he didn’t get it, or the man who sacrificed his ambition for Nigeria and took it from the cliff to the pathway of modern progress and advancement?”

Nigeria Now a K!lling Field, Over 10,000 Deaths Under Tinubu’s Watch — Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi has described Nigeria as a k!lling field.
According to him, under President Bola Tinubu’s watch, over 10,000 Nigerians have been k!lled across Nigeria by non-state actors.
Quoting figures released by Amnesty International, he said over 10,000 lives have been lost to terrorists, bandits and other criminal gangs in just two years.
In a post on his official X handle yesterday, Obi said: “We can’t stop bemoaning the unending killing in the country. Despite not being at war, the killing, abduction and banditry incidents in our country continue to be daily and increasing at a worrisome rate.

“The recent attack in Okigwe, Imo State, that claimed the lives of many, with so many others still missing and feared dead, reflects once again, the alarming insecurity reality in our dear country.

“Over the weekend, I read in the dailies that Amnesty International warned that the Nigerian government is emboldening bandits through its “stunning failure” to protect citizens.

“They described the week as a bloody one, recording several deaths across various parts of the country, including the massacre of over 50 worshippers in a mosque in Katsina, the abduction of over 60 people in the same Katsina State, and the killing of over 15 farmers in Mangu, Plateau State, which displaced more than 200 families in just days. All of these in a single week in the country.

“Amnesty International further revealed that in just two years of this administration, over 10,000 Nigerians have been killed by armed groups in various states across Nigeria. Instead of improving security, insecurity has worsened under this administration and in just two years, with new armed gangs emerging.

“Nigeria, which is not even officially at war, has recorded over 10,000 civilian deaths in just two years, a number similar to civilian deaths in Ukraine, which is officially at war.

“This means that, in just two years, Nigeria’s insecurity crisis has taken almost as many civilian lives as a country under open warfare.

“We must now wake up as a nation. The first duty of any government is to secure the lives and property of its people.

“This should concern all of us who claim to be politicians and leaders. We must put Nigerian citizens first, stop the politicking, name-calling, and gossip, and focus on addressing these real issues. The time to act is now. A new Nigeria is possible.”

2027: I’ll Run With Peter Obi – Datti Baba-Ahmed Says

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential running mate, said on Friday that he is open to contesting alongside Peter Obi again in 2027.

Baba-Ahmed stated that he would consider running with Obi if Nigeria’s electoral system improves.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he said: “If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow, my love for Nigeria is undying, mark that.

“I will appropriately associate with groups and individuals I think are like minded.”

On the possibility of still running with Peter Obi, he said: “Absolutely, if you had heard what I was saying on air two months ago, there are two individuals that I would succumb to.

“The first has not said, so I won’t say it on his behalf, and the second one is Peter Obi and always Peter Obi until he decides not to.”

When asked if he would consider running with Rotimi Amaechi, he said: “The first person is not Rotimi Amaechi. Amaechi is a good guy. By the way, why do you think that I have to be a deputy? Don’t keep looking at me like a deputy.”
