Record Labels Wanted to Change My Sound – Johnny Drille

Nigerian singer, John Ighodaro aka Johnny Drille has opened up that he was pressured to change his musicial style but he refused.
According to him, two major labels who were interested in signing him asked him to change his sound but he chose to remain authentic.
The ‘Wait For Me’ crooner explained that Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy took a huge gamble by signing him.
He emphasised that Don Jazzy signed him primarily because he is a fan of his music and not for profit, initially.
Speaking in a recent episode of the CreativTea podcast, Johnny Drille said,“People could never had imagined that a Mavin Records under Don Jazzy would sign an alternative artist like myself. It was weird for a lot of people.

“There were two other major labels in Nigeria that wanted to sign me but the conversation was always around, ‘How do we change your sound? How do we make it faster? How do we make it danceable?’

“However, when I met Don Jazzy, there were no conversations like that. He was just really a fan of the music…that was a big risk to take, but he pulled it off.”
Johnny Drille gained prominence after participating in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013. His debut single ‘Wait For Me’ was released in 2015.
The singer joined Mavin Records in 2017 and released his debut album, ‘Before We Fall Asleep’ in 2012.

Christian Community Criticize Me For Performing In Churches – Johnny Drille

Nigerian singer cum songwriter, Johnny Drille has called out the Christian community.

This is as he lamented that they criticize him for performing in churches.

The Mavin Records artist stated this in a recent episode of the CreativiTEA podcast.
He also noted that his music has grown beyond traditional Christian boundaries.
He said, “I love God and I’m very much involved in church, but I never really felt my music was for church. Sometimes I get invited to perform in church, which is quite interesting.

“I’ve gotten some backlash from the Christian community whenever I perform in churches. But the truth is my music spreads positivity. It touches the issues the church tries to avoid.”
The singer further argued that the church often neglects conversations about love, a subject theme he believes is both important and spiritual.
He added, “The church shies away from talking about love. You go to Christian weddings you hear Davido and Wizkid song. What if the church decides that we want to start doing their own Christian love songs.”

I Never Felt My Place Was In Church – Nigerian Singer, Johnny Drille Reveals

Afrobeats singer and songwriter, Johnny Drille, has reflected on his musical journey, revealing how he struggled to find acceptance within the church community despite beginning his career there.

Speaking during a recent podcast appearance, the singer revealed that although he once served as a music director in church, he never truly felt his style of music belonged there.

“I didn’t feel like my music was predominantly in church. Every now and then, I get invited to churches to sing, which is kind of interesting,”
he said.

Johnny Drille also admitted that his transition from gospel to mainstream music came with backlash from some members of the Christian community.

“I’ve gotten a bit of backlash from my Christian community every now and then when they invite me to churches. But at the end of the day, the music is positive. It speaks to good things that sometimes the church doesn’t want to talk about,”
he explained.

He went on to criticise how churches often shy away from expressing love through music.

“The church shies away from talking about love. A lot of times you go for some Christian weddings and you hear Davido and Wizkid. What if the church decides that we want to start doing our own Christian love songs?” he said.

Reflecting on his early days, Johnny Drille said his time as a choir director helped shape his skills as a musician, even though he didn’t perform much at the time.

“There’s a place for worship music, right? But there’s also music about so much more that the church could be singing about. I was a music director, directing the choir, but I never really sang in front of the church. I think it helped me become the musician I am today in terms of my musicianship and performances,”
he added.
