Posting on his verified Facebook page, Atiku wrote: “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”

This comes after the former Vice President officially joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Atiku officially joined the ADC following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over claims that the party has derailed from the principles of its founding fathers.

There are indications that Atiku may emerge as the presidential candidate of the ADC for the 2027 election.

Why I Stepped Back From Politics — Ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan Opens Up

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that his involvement with the West African Elders Forum is a key reason for his ongoing absence from active and partisan politics.

Jonathan made the remark in Abuja while speaking at an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) on Thursday, themed “Legacy of Impact, Celebrating Our Journey.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event also featured a gala dinner held in celebration of Jonathan’s 68th birthday.

Explaining his absence from active politics to associates, Jonathan said WAEF membership comes with a strict condition of non-partisanship. He described the forum as a preventive diplomacy initiative composed of former heads of state who visit countries within the sub-region during elections to mediate and prevent crises arising from poorly managed polls.

“The idea is, yes, we observe the elections, but we are not co-observers,” he said. “We go there to make sure that if we notice anything negative emerging, we intervene and try to see what we can do so that those issues do not snowball into a full crisis.”

Jonathan added: “The condition to be a member of the WAEF is that you must be a former president within the sub-region and a former president of ECOWAS. One clear condition is that you will no longer be an active politician, and that is why I am disappointing most of my political associates. They expect me to play an active role in politics, but before I do, I must first resign from the WAEF.”

On the state of the nation, Jonathan decried what he termed “rascality” in politics, urging politicians to conduct themselves with decorum and responsibility.

He observed that unlike professions such as teaching, which require training and certification, many people enter politics and assume leadership positions without proper preparation.

“We must change the face of politics. We must see politics as a business of responsible individuals, not a business of rascals that they play in the motor park,”
he said.

The former president also expressed deep sadness over the recent kidnapping of about 25 girls in Kebbi State, noting that the incident reminded him of the abduction of the Chibok girls during his tenure. He offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, including a vice principal, and called for prayers for the safe rescue of the abductees and an end to such tragedies.

Recounting the origins of his foundation after losing the 2015 general election, Jonathan disclosed that businessman Tony Elumelu suggested the idea. While he initially considered broad areas like education and poverty alleviation, advisers recommended focusing on areas where he had global credibility.

He said democracy was chosen as the Foundation’s focus because of his role in strengthening the electoral commission and conceding defeat before the 2015 elections concluded — a gesture celebrated worldwide. Jonathan added that despite his academic and professional background in environmental protection and coming from the Niger Delta, he chose to leave environmental issues to others and concentrate the Foundation’s efforts on democracy and governance.

In her remarks, GJF Executive Director Ms. Ann Iyonu described the event as a moment of reflection on a decade of dedication to inclusive democratic governance, peace building, and development across Africa.

Iyonu said the Foundation has remained committed to advancing democracy, equity, and progress through strategic initiatives and partnerships. She noted that ten years later, GJF proudly declares that “together they have turned bold ideas into transformative action.”

She highlighted the Foundation’s role in strengthening democratic institutions through election mediation missions, observation missions, policy dialogues, and strategic advocacy across the continent. She also noted that the Foundation’s annual Democracy Dialogue, inaugurated in 2021, has become a vital platform for engagement and strategic action.

“This year in Accra, we gathered under the theme ‘Why Democracies Die,’ a timely inquiry into the structural and systemic factors undermining democratic resilience in Africa and globally,”
she said.

Iyonu added that the Foundation’s peace building efforts have fostered peaceful political transitions, promoted inclusive governance, and advanced the security of African states and citizens within the rule of law, human rights, and democratic principles.

She further stated that the Foundation has contributed to preventing violent extremism online and offline, improved trust between state institutions and citizens, and expanded Africa’s global presence through international partnerships.

2027: Jonathan Has Not Told Me He Wants To Run For President  —  Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan has not informed him of any intention to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike made the remark during a media parley with journalists in Abuja on Friday, while responding to questions about speculations that Jonathan was being pressured to return to the presidential race.

“You’re the one telling me here. Jonathan has never told me; he has never called me one day that, look, I’m being pressured to run, what’s your thinking? If he calls me and asks me, I will be able to tell him my mind and what I feel,”
Wike said.

He added, “I will not because you people put something on the pages of the newspapers — just like you said they flew me out of the country — then, I now assume it’s correct.”

On the emergence of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike distanced himself from the development, saying he knows nothing about it.

“I don’t know about Tanimu Turaki becoming chairman; maybe he becomes chairman for another faction — it’s not the PDP I know,”
he stated.

The PDP Northern stakeholders had recently endorsed Turaki as their consensus candidate ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking further, Wike dismissed the upcoming convention as illegal, hinting that he would not attend.

“How do you want me to attend a convention that I know by law that there is no convention?”
he queried.

Meanwhile, former President Jonathan is reportedly under intense pressure to drop his speculated 2027 presidential ambition and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Vanguard reports that the pressure is being spearheaded by influential Niger Delta figures, including ex-militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

Some of Jonathan’s kinsmen in the Niger Delta are also said to have urged him to shelve any plans to return to power and instead back Tinubu’s second-term bid.

2027: Why Goodluck Jonathan Is Not A Threat To Tinubu – Presidential Aide

Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, Senior Special Assistant on Print Media to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed speculations about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential political comeback, stating that there is nothing to worry about if he chooses to run again.

Speaking in an interview in Kano, AbdulAziz said Jonathan’s previous defeat as a sitting president shows he poses no political threat.

“Somebody who was defeated while he was a sitting President, there is nothing he can do now. Maybe he can come and try his luck. It is the beauty of democracy. Anybody can decide to contest.”

AbdulAziz, however, insisted that Jonathan’s possible return does not bother anyone, including President Bola Tinubu.

“But Jonathan is not a threat at all. No one is scared of him. Certainly, not the President,”
he said.

“As I said, someone who could not win his election while he was president, why will he be a threat now that he is far away from the stool, aside other constraints?”

He also cautioned Jonathan against allowing himself to be misled by people. urging him to re-enter the race.

“I am sure that some people will want to mislead him,”
AbdulAziz warned.

“Personally I will say that he should not listen to people who want to destroy him or who want to demystify him by urging him on to a contest that is a no contest in the reality—because I don’t see where Jonathan will make an in-road or get any substantial vote in that election.”

2027: You Can’t Match Tinubu – Jandor Tells Jonathan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State during the 2023 general elections, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to disregard calls for him to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Jandor, Lead Visioner of the Lagos4Lagos Movement, gave this advise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

According to him, Jonathan would be taking a political risk by contesting, predicting he would be reduced to a minnow by President Bola Tinubu at the polls.

Jandor urged the ex-president to stay in retirement.

He further told Jonathan that those telling him to run against Tinubu were deceiving him, reiterating that Tinubu is a master in the game of politics, who cannot be defeated by Jonathan or any other figure in 2027.

“I disagree with people calling on Jonathan to re-contest, people saying Jonathan is the only person who can challenge Tinubu, citing his popularity and experience.

“It was this same man (Tinubu) who defeated him (Jonathan) from the outside. So, they are not the same. If you accidentally found yourself at the Aso Villa as President, it is different from somebody who gave his all to get there.

“It is different from somebody who, against all odds, got there. They did all sorts for him not to get there, and he got there. Such a man, cannot be put side by side with somebody who just slept and woke up and found himself on the seat of President,” he said.

I Never Linked Buhari to Boko Haram, Trending Reports Are Misleading – Goodluck Jonathan Clarifies

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has clarified that he did not accuse former President Muhammadu Buhari in his recent remarks concerning Boko Haram’s activities in Nigeria.

Jonathan, in a statement on Saturday, said certain reports in the media suggesting that he alleged that Boko Haram nominated the late President Buhari to represent them in dialogue with the federal government, and therefore, somehow complicit in the Boko Haram crisis, are misleading.

He submitted that his comments on Buhari and Boko Haram were grossly misinterpreted.

Recall that Jonathan spoke on Friday in Abuja at the public presentation of “Scars,” a book authored by former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Lucky Irabor (retd.).

His comments, however, have attracted a series of backlash.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan, however, clarified that he was referring to the deceitful nature of the insurgents in his speech.

He explained that Boko Haram often invoked the names of respected public figures to sow confusion, exploit political divisions, and undermine public confidence in government.

The statement added that Jonathan’s comments were not an accusation against the late former president or any other individual.

It reads, “The attention of the Office of Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been drawn to misleading reports circulating in sections of the media suggesting that Dr. Jonathan alleged that Boko Haram nominated the late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to represent them in dialogue with the Federal Government, and therefore this made him somehow complicit in the Boko Haram crisis.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that the former President’s comments were grossly misrepresented. At no time did Dr. Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram or that he supported the group in any form.

“Dr. Jonathan’s remarks, made in the course of a broader discussion on Nigeria’s security challenges, were meant to illustrate the deviousness and manipulative strategies employed by Boko Haram in their early years. His reference was to a well-documented episode when various individuals and factions falsely claimed to represent the terrorist group and purported to name prominent Nigerians as possible mediators: without those individuals’ knowledge or consent.

“The point Dr. Jonathan sought to make was that Boko Haram, in its characteristic deceit, often invoked the names of respected public figures to sow confusion, exploit political divisions, and undermine public confidence in government. His comments were therefore an illustration of the group’s duplicity, not an accusation against the late former president or any individual for that matter.

“The former president’s position was that if indeed Buhari was their choice negotiator, why didn’t Boko Haram expeditiously bring their evil terrorist agenda to an end when the retired General became president?

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dr. Jonathan recognizes that President Muhammadu Buhari, like every patriotic Nigerian, stood firmly against terrorism and was himself a target of Boko Haram violence. Both men, during their respective tenures, shared a common commitment to restoring peace and stability to Nigeria.

“The Office of the Former President therefore urges the public to disregard any misinterpretation of his remarks. Dr. Jonathan remains committed to peace, unity, and the strengthening of democratic values in Nigeria. He believes that the nation’s progress depends on a truthful understanding of its challenges, not on the distortion of facts for political or sensational purposes.”

Vote Out Any Leader Who Fails To Perform – Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that leaders who fail to deliver on their responsibilities should be removed from office through credible and transparent elections.

This is as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, called for the reform of democracy and its protection in Africa.

Jonathan stated that electoral manipulation is one of the biggest threats to democracy in Africa.

According to him, unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform democracy, it may collapse in Africa.

Jonathan stated this at the 2025 edition of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, GJF, Democracy Dialogue, held in Accra, Ghana.

The former Nigerian leader, in a statement issued on Saturday by Communications Officer at Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Wealth Dickson Ominabo, said where democracy fails to meet expectations, desperation can open the door to authoritarianism.

He added that leaders must commit to the kind of democracy that guarantees a great future for the children, where their voices matter.

“Democracy in the African continent is going through a period of strain and risk of collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it. Electoral manipulation remains one of the biggest threats in Africa.

“We in Africa must begin to look at our democracy and rethink it in a way that works well for us and our people. One of the problems is our electoral system. People manipulate the process to remain in power by all means.

“If we had proper elections, a leader who fails to perform would be voted out. But in our case, people use the system to perpetuate themselves even when the people don’t want them,” he said.

Also speaking, the President of Ghana, Mahama, said democracy would not survive unless Africans actively worked to protect and strengthen it.

He warned that weak institutions, elite capture, exclusion, leadership deficits, and external interference erode citizens’ trust in democracy.

On his part, former President Obasanjo, who was the chairman of the event, warned that democracy risks collapse if it continued to be practised in its current form without urgent reforms.

He said Africa’s current democratic practice is unsustainable and must be urgently reformed.

No Investor Will Risk Money Where Govt Functionary Dictates Court Rulings – Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that investors will shy away from committing resources to any economy where the judiciary is compromised and manipulated by political influence.

Jonathan made the remarks on Wednesday at the Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana.

He stressed that judicial independence is crucial to building a stable and trustworthy business environment.

“It affects everybody. For example, no businessman can bring his money to invest in a country where the judiciary is compromised, where a government functionary can dictate to judges what judgment they will give. No man brings his money to invest in that economy because they are taking a big risk,” he said.

Jonathan added that for Nigeria to secure its future, leaders must uphold justice and fairness irrespective of personal or political interests.

“If we must build a nation for our children and grandchildren, no matter how painful it is, we must strive to do what is right,”
he said.

Also speaking at the event, Bishop Mathew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto praised Jonathan’s 2015 concession of defeat as a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy. He cautioned the former president to be wary of political actors seeking to use him for their own agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

Quoting General Theophilus Danjuma, Kukah said: “The voice of the devil is not so far from the voice of God. Listen carefully to those who want to use you as an instrument for the elongation of their interests, and not your interests or the interests of Nigeria.”

Details Of Peter Obi’s Meeting With Goodluck Jonathan Emerge

There are signs that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi could soon settle the ongoing discussions regarding a united opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Recall that the two leaders held a meeting behind closed doors on Thursday, according to details shared by Peter Obi on his X account.

In an interview with Daily Trust, sources familiar with the meeting said the engagement was a continuation of earlier conversations between Peter Obi and Jonathan on the permutations for 2027.

One of the sources stated that both men have acknowledged sharing the same political base, and a separate bid by each could hand President Bola Tinubu an easy victory.

The source also confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been wooing Jonathan, but he is wary of the internal crisis in the party.

The source said, “This is the third or fourth time they’ve met since around Easter, but all the previous meetings were kept under wraps. The crux has been who should step down for the other as the coalition’s presidential candidate.

“You know the bulk of the votes Obi secured in 2023 came from the South, particularly the South East and South South, and also the traditional Middlebelt, which had also been Jonathan’s stronghold in 2011. They realised they cannot afford to approach the next election independently.

“Another matter is the platform. Many PDP leaders have been appealing to Jonathan to fly the party’s flag, but he is wary of the internal crisis. He is waiting for assurances.”

Another source also stated that Peter Obi’s camp has raised concerns about being sidelined in the coalition they helped build.

He said, “The ADC has not been able to fully convince the Obidient Movement that the party was not structured to deliver an Atiku presidency.”

2027: Goodluck Jonathan And Peter Obi Hold Closed-Door Meeting In Abuja

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, held a private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Thursday.

Obi, who disclosed the visit in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, described Jonathan as his ”elder brother, a statesman, and leader,” adding that they had a fruitful meeting and discussed the state of the nation.

“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.

Although details of the meeting were not made public, the development comes amid ongoing conversations about Nigeria’s political direction and the state of governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration

Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, has in recent years positioned himself as a mediator in national and continental issues, particularly in conflict resolution and democratic strengthening efforts across Africa.

Obi, on his part, has continued to engage stakeholders following his strong showing in the 2023 elections, where he came third behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The meeting is the latest in Obi’s series of consultations with key political figures as discussions around Nigeria’s future political realignments intensify.

Attempts to obtain clarification from Obi’s former campaign spokesman, Dr Yunusa Tanko, and leaders of the Obidient Movement were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.

Thursday’s meeting is the latest in Obi’s string of high-level engagements, signalling what observers believe could be the early stirrings of a new political coalition.

Speculations became rife of Jonathan’s possible return after the Peoples Democratic Party zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

There have also been reports that the PDP had been wooing Obi to return to the party, as he is seen as major force capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
