Genevieve Nnaji Returns to Screen in BBC Drama Series Wahala

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a highly anticipated return to the screen in a new drama series titled Wahala, produced by BBC Studios.

The six-part thriller, adapted from a work by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko, will be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer and will also air on BBC One.

BBC announced the casting on Tuesday, revealing a female-led ensemble that includes Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma, alongside Nnaji.

Based on Nikki May’s debut novel, the series follows four Nigerian-British women as they navigate the complexities of friendship, careers, romance, and family life in contemporary London, while grappling with dark secrets from their past.

The central storyline revolves around three close friends Simi, Boo, and Ronke, played by Adedayo, Jumbo, and Wokoma respectively — whose bond is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of a fourth woman, Isobel, portrayed by Ayorinde.

The drama is described as an exploration of betrayal, buried truths, and the consequences of long-concealed secrets.

Nnaji expressed enthusiasm about joining the project, describing it as an intriguing story and praising the caliber of the team involved.

The role marks one of Nnaji’s most significant acting engagements in recent years.

Her last major project was Lionheart, her directorial debut, which premiered internationally in 2018 and subsequently streamed on Netflix in January 2019.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, Nnaji has maintained a relatively low public profile in the years since, making her return to the screen a much-anticipated moment for fans.

The title Wahala, which translates to “trouble” in Nigerian Pidgin, is being produced by Firebird Pictures, a company under the BBC Studios umbrella.

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has responded to questions about her friendship with fellow actress Genevieve Nnaji.

It is widely believed the movie stars were not on good terms, especially since they are no longer seen together, unlike in their early days in the movie industry.

However, in a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, the thespian confirmed that their bond remains strong.

She said that fans need not worry about any tensions between them.

The interviewer asked: “Are Omotola and Genevieve still friends?”

“Oh, Jesus Christ. We are good”, she said.

The actress also shared her admiration for Chidi Mokeme, naming him as her favourite Nollywood actor.

Omotola noted that both on and off screen, Mokeme stands out as a talented performer who continues to impress her.

In a previous interview, Omotola dismissed a purported feud with Genevieve.

She clarified that they were never fighting and stressed that it was similar to the speculation people make about Nigerian singers.

While accusing fans of pitching them against each other, Omotola said, “Na them start the quarrel before we know say we dey quarrel.

“So, we have to catch up with the quarrel. There was no quarrel. People don’t need to be best friends, but we talked. Like behind film, we dey talk normally.”
