“I cried, tore my shirt and went home” — Man recounts how girlfriend married his friend while he was at university

A Nigerian man has recounted how his girlfriend, a nurse who once supported him financially and bought him his first Samsung phone, left him heartbroken after marrying his friend while he was at university.

The man said their relationship began around 2012 or 2013, when the woman was in charge of his community health centre. According to him, she supported his education and even gave him her ATM card to cover his admission expenses.

However, things changed after he gained admission into university and began concentrating on his studies.

He explained that he had vowed not to date any woman on campus until he graduated, but his girlfriend reportedly became insecure, fearing that other women had taken her place in his life.

How he discovered his girlfriend’s traditional marriage

The man said he was shocked when his cousin called to inform him that his girlfriend’s traditional  marriage was scheduled to take place in a week.

He initially refused to believe the news until he saw pictures from the event.

According to him, he later discovered that the woman had  married his friend, who used to visit her at the health centre whenever he returned from Onitsha, where he did business.

The revelation left him devastated. He said he rushed home, cried and tore his shirt after learning what had happened.

How his father helped him overcome heartbreak

The man said his family members already knew about the situation and were prepared to comfort him.

His father advised him to focus on loving himself, completing his education and building a better future rather than dwelling on the relationship’s painful ending.

Although moving on was difficult, he said he followed his father’s advice and remained single until he completed university and started working.

He added that he eventually ended his period of being single on January 11, 2020.
