Barcelona Star Lamine Yamal Suffers Injury Blow but Remains World Cup Hopeful

Lamine Yamal of Spain has suffered a hamstring injury but is expected to be fine for the World Cup, his club Barcelona confirmed on Thursday.

“Tests have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg,” Barca reported.

“The athlete will receive conservative therapy. Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season but is anticipated to be available for the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19 this year.

Spain begins their campaign in Group H against Cape Verde on June 15, then faces Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay six days later.

Yamal suffered the injury during Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo in La Liga on Wednesday.

“This injury is going to keep me off the pitch just when I wanted to be there the most, and that hurts even more than I can put into words,” Yamal posted on social media.

“This is not the end; it is simply a respite. I’ll come back stronger and more determined than before, and the next season will be better.”

The teenage Spain star, who has six goals in 25 national team appearances since his debut in 2023, won and converted a penalty to secure a tight home victory over Celta.

However, after beating Ionut Radu with a low penalty, Yamal pulled up hurt, screaming for medical attention and lying on the turf as his teammates gathered to celebrate.

“He wouldn’t leave the pitch without a reason,” stated Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. “As a coach, you have to deal with it. It’s a shame Lamine is injured now.”

Barcelona’s victory put them nine points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the league, with six games remaining, including a Clasico on May 10.

Yamal is the club’s top scorer with 24 goals this season, despite missing games in September and October due to a groin injury.

He was a key member of Spain’s Euro 2024 winning team and expressed his excitement for the World Cup earlier this week.

“Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve dreamed of playing in a World Cup, seeing my mother in the stands, and representing my country,” Yamal said at the Laureus World Sports Awards.

“These two months will seem very short to me and I hope we’ll finish as champions.”

Even though he is not yet totally healthy, he is expected to make manager Luis de la Fuente’s final roster.

Yamal joins Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Mikel Merino, and Nico Williams as crucial Spain internationals who have been sidelined or are on their way back to full fitness.

However, due to the high danger of exacerbating the injury, the 18-year-old may be rested at the start of the competition.

Osimhen’s Return Not Enough as Galatasaray Crash Out of Turkish Cup

In the Turkish Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday, Galatasaray lost 2-0 against Genclerbirligi due to a lack of motivation from their injured striker, Victor Osimhen.

After suffering an arm injury against Liverpool in the Champions League, Osimhen has been sidelined for more than a month.

However, the Super Eagles star started the game on the bench against Genclerbirligi.

After winning the Super Lig last weekend, Galatasaray were overwhelming favorites coming into the match.

Despite controlling the game, the Yellow and Reds were unable to score.

Firatcan Uzum gave the visitors the lead in the 51st minute.

In the 78th minute, Okan Buruk substituted Osimhen as Gala battled to regain control of the match.

However, Adama Traore gave Genclerbirligi their second goal five minutes after Osimhen was substituted.

World Cup Twist? Paolo Zampolli Urges FIFA to Replace Iran with Italy

Paolo Zampolli, the ambassador of US President Donald Trump, has requested FIFA to substitute Italy for Iran in the 2026 World Cup.

This is a component of a strategy to mend Trump’s relationship with Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy.

After Trump attacked Pope Leo XIV over the Iran War, the two leaders became estranged.

“I certify that I have recommended Italy take Iran’s spot at the World Cup to Trump and [FIFA president Gianni] Infantino.

“Seeing the Azzurri at a tournament held in the United States would be a dream come true for me as an Italian.

Zampolli told the Financial Times, “With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”

After losing 4-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a qualification play-off in March, Italy was unable to advance to the World Cup.

Chelsea Sack Head Coach After Historic Goal Drought and 5 Straight Defeats in Shock Decision

After less than four months in charge and after losing five straight Premier League games without scoring for the first time since 1912, Chelsea fired head coach Liam Rosenior.

Rosenior signed a five-and-a-half-year contract to join Stamford Bridge in January, but he has only won 11 of his 23 appearances in all competitions.

Rosenior called the performance “indefensible” and “unacceptable” during Tuesday’s 3-0 loss at Brighton in response to irate jeers from the traveling fans.

Their chances of making it to the Champions League the next season were further damaged as they fell to seventh place in the Premier League standings.

“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season,” Chelsea commented. “This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”

Until the end of the season, Calum McFarlane will serve as the interim manager.

After former manager Enzo Maresca was fired in January, McFarlane, Rosenior’s assistant, oversaw a 1-1 draw at Manchester City and a loss at Fulham.

Chelsea further stated, “As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”

Rosenior helped the Blues advance to the semi-finals of the FA Cup by leading them to four wins over lower-league teams and winning five of his 13 Premier League outings.

Chelsea will play Leeds at Wembley on Sunday (15:00 BST) in McFarlane’s first game as manager in an attempt to advance to the FA Cup final.

Messi’s Former Mentor Takes Over Inter Miami, Vows To Get Tough With The GOAT

Guillermo Hoyos stated that he won’t let his long friendship with Lionel Messi stop him from working the Argentine superstar hard in training, as he was unveiled as the new coach of MLS side Inter Miami on Wednesday.

Hoyos, previously Miami’s sporting director, replaces Javier Mascherano, who departed the club for “personal reasons” on Tuesday, just four months after guiding the club to its first MLS Cup title.

The 62-year-old Hoyos was an important previous instructor of Messi with Barcelona’s youth team more than two decades ago, and the Argentine pair have remained close ever since. “Friendship is non-negotiable. We share a friendship that spans many years,” said Hoyos, speaking in Spanish, at his first press conference.

“However, that friendship does not mean that we will be constantly hovering over him or in his face every single day.”

Hoyos will be in control of the team for the “upcoming matches,” according to a club statement, but the team has already referred to him as head coach in social media posts. Club sources told AFP that Hoyos is expected to remain at the helm only until the middle of the year, with a new coaching setup in place by the start of the Leagues Cup in August.

After seven rounds this season, Inter Miami sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference.

The star of Miami’s team is Messi, who won the World Cup in 2022 and has won eight Ballon d’Or awards.

UEFA Gives Clarifications After PSG’s Penalty Call Against Liverpool Was Overturned

After the VAR ruling, UEFA provided a detailed explanation to overturn a penalty initially awarded to Paris Saint-Germain during their Champions League semi-final first-leg clash with Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes.

The Ligue 1 winners had a 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, when Liverpool’s situation appeared set to worsen in the 70th minute. Ibrahima Konaté was adjudged to have fouled Warren Zaïre-Emery inside the penalty area, with referee José María Sánchez immediately pointing to the spot and showing the defender a yellow card.

But VAR stepped in right away and suggested a review. Replays showed that Konaté had made a fair challenge and won the ball before any significant contact with the PSG midfielder. After a brief pitchside check, Sánchez overturned his initial decision, cancelled the penalty, withdrew the yellow card, and awarded a free-kick to Liverpool.

Later, UEFA provided clarification on the call on its official Champions League live blog, saying:
“Decision overturned: no penalty. Penalty cancelled – no foul. Liverpool player No. 5 challenged for the ball in a fair manner without committing a foul.”

The incident sparked debate among pundits. Speaking on TNT Sports, Ally McCoist backed the decision, saying: “I thought it looked a brilliant challenge. He comes from behind, but it seemed like he got the ball cleanly.”

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson disagreed, arguing: “Konaté gets on the wrong side and isn’t goal-side. He does get a touch on the ball, but I think he catches Zaïre-Emery first.”

Less sure, Stephen Warnock added: “I’m still not convinced either way. He may brush the player before the ball, but I’m not sure it’s enough to warrant a penalty.”

PSG won 2-0 to seize control of the match, and Liverpool was unable to react even if the decision went in their favor. I

Senegal Reject CAF’s Decision To Declare Morocco AFCON 2025 Winners

The Senegalese Football Federation has rejected a contentious ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board that awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Morocco, announcing plans to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Morocco were on Tuesday declared champions after CAF overturned the result of the final against Senegal, ruling that the West African side forfeited the match following a walk-off during the game in Rabat on January 19.

CAF stated that “the Senegal national team is declared to have forfeited the final match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, with the result recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.”

The decision followed a protest by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football after chaotic scenes late in the final, when Senegal players briefly left the pitch after a disallowed goal and a penalty awarded to the hosts. The appeal board ruled the incident fell under Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations on misconduct and forfeiture.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 18, the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) said it had taken note of the decision delivered by CAF’s Appeal Committee in case DC23316, which followed a complaint filed during match 52 of the final.

“The Senegalese Football Federation has today taken note of the notification of the decision rendered on March 17, 2026, by the Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football, in the context of case DC23316,” the statement read.

The federation said the appeal board declared admissible the protest lodged by the Moroccan federation and overturned the earlier decision of the CAF Disciplinary Board, citing a procedural flaw in the initial hearing.

“With this decision, the CAF Appeals Board declared the appeal of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation admissible and accepted it,” the FSF said.

“In doing so, the board overturned the decision rendered by the CAF Disciplinary Board, because the appellant’s right to be heard had not been respected during the initial proceedings,” the FSF said.

According to the statement, the appeal committee ruled that the conduct of the Senegal national team fell under Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, leading to the forfeiture decision.

“The Appeals Committee also determined that the conduct of the Senegalese team fell under Articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations,” the federation stated.

“Consequently, CAF declared that the FSF had violated Article 82 and awarded the match by forfeit, with a recorded score of 3-0 in favour of the FRMF, in accordance with Article 84.”

Reacting to the verdict, the Senegalese federation criticised the decision, describing it as damaging to the credibility of African football.

“The Senegalese Football Federation denounces an unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision that discredits African football,” the statement added.

The federation confirmed that it would file an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“To defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the Federation will initiate, as soon as possible, an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” the statement said.

The FSF added that it remained committed to due process and would continue to inform the public as the case progresses.

“The FSF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the values of integrity and sporting justice, and will keep the public informed of the follow-up to this matter,” the statement concluded.

AFCON 2025: ‘Daylight Robbery’ – Shehu Sani Slams CAF For Declaring Morocco Winner

Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for stripping Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

CAF announced on Tuesday evening that Morocco is now the winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The CAF Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco, declaring that Senegal had forfeited the AFCON final when they walked off the field during the final game.

For this reason, Morocco were awarded a 3–0 walkover victory.

This decision upholds Morocco’s appeal following the chaotic events in the match.

Morocco had remained on the pitch after the centre referee awarded them a controversial penalty while Senegalese players, propelled by their coach, protested by walking off the pitch.

Only Sadio Mane, the team’s captain, remained on the field of play and later persuaded others to come back and continue the match.

Morocco missed the penalty as Senegal went on to win the game by a lone goal.

Angered by CAF’s decision, Sani wrote on X, “Senegal won the AFCON on the pitch but was snatched by CAF in the Boardroom; that’s unconscionable and a dangerous precedent in African football.

“The fact that the Senegalese team walked out in protest and returned to play till the final whistle doesn’t warrant this afterthought daylight robbery. They just want to reward Morocco for hosting and losing.”

CAF Declares Morocco Winners Of AFCON 2025, Strips Senegal Of Title

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially declared Morocco the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The CAF Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco, declaring that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final by walking off the field during the game.

Morocco were awarded a 3–0 walkover victory.

This decision upholds Morocco’s appeal following the chaotic events in the match.

Recall that the Senegal team briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a controversial penalty was awarded to Morocco late in regulation time.

They were called back to the field by their captain, Sadio Mané, and later won the game 1–0.

CAF determined that this action constituted a violation of Article 84, or the equivalent regulations concerning refusal to play or abandoning the field.

Under AFCON rules, a team that refuses to continue playing or leaves the field without authorization faces elimination and forfeiture of the match.
