AFCON: Ademola Lookman Sends Message To Nigerians After Super Eagles 3-2 Win Over Tunisia

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has addressed Nigerian fans after their 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday night.

Lookman provided two assists and netted one to earn himself the Man of the Match in the 3-2 win over the Carthage Eagles.

Nigeria has made it to the round of sixteen with the win and will play Uganda in a game that is no longer of much importance to the team.

Lookman has been outstanding so far in the competition, having won the game against Tanzania for Eric Chelle’s side.

Speaking after the game against Tunisia, Lookman said, “We’re in the right direction. I think today we’re outstanding from the first half into the second half, and then, you know, they had a spell in which they scored two goals.

“But apart from that, we were very good today.”

Asked if he had any particular message to the  Nigerian fans, he added, “Keep supporting us.

“We really need you. So keep on being behind us. Keep on driving us and yeah, keep supporting us. Thank you.”

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Thrash Tunisia 3-2 To Qualify For Round Of 16

Nigeria secured qualification for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a thrilling 3–2 win over Tunisia on Saturday night.

The Super Eagles began their tournament with a narrow 2-1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday.

And they came into this game knowing that three points against the Carthage Eagles will put them in control of Group C.

The North Africans had thrashed Uganda 3-0 in their opening fixture and were also keen to qualify.

But Victor Osimhen headed Nigeria into the lead before the break, before goals from Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman put Eric Chelle’s men in firm control.

Tunisia pulled one back through Montassar Talbi, before a late penalty was converted by Ali Al-Abdi.

The result means Nigeria have six points from two matches, while Tunisia remain second with three points.

Nigeria vs Tunisia AFCON 2025 Preview: Kick-Off Time, Head-To-Head, Where To Watch

One of African football’s most storied rivalries takes the spotlight again on Saturday night as Nigeria faces Tunisia in a crucial Group C clash at the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Fès, Morocco.

Both teams come into the fixture buoyed by victories on Matchday One and know that another win could be enough to seal early qualification for the knockout rounds. It is also an opportunity for Nigeria to respond to recent history against opponents who knocked them out of the 2021 AFCON in the round of 16.

The Super Eagles opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Tanzania, with Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman on target. Tunisia were more commanding in their first outing, easing past Uganda 3-1 thanks to goals from Ellyes Skhiri and a brace by Elias Achouri to sit top of the group.

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chell, said his players have worked hard in training and understand the level of focus required against a technically strong Tunisian side.

“For this game, we had a training session to recover, and we tried to put more intensity in the training session. Tunisia is a great team, and they are playing very well. Let’s go for this game,” Chelle said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

The Franco-Malian tactician admitted that there were moments Nigeria could improve on from the Tanzania match, but was pleased with the mentality shown by his players.

“We analysed the game, and we did some things in the game, bad and good. But the goal was bad for us,” he said. “The reality was that we scored immediately after the goal, and that was a good reaction. We will work on it, and if there is no mistake, there is no goal, but my players are very ready for this game.”

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi believes the team is mentally prepared, particularly after the disappointment of their 1-0 defeat to Tunisia at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

“It was a painful loss in 2021. It gives us more confidence when we talk about it. We don’t want to think about what happened; we just want to face this one,”
 Ndidi said.

“Definitely, it is a new team, good players, and a good group. We spoke highly of it because it is not going to happen twice, hopefully.”

Ndidi also dismissed suggestions that Nigeria are under pressure following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“There’s no pressure on us, no pressure at all. We didn’t qualify for the World Cup, but we are actually ready for this tournament; it’s just like another opportunity to correct the wrong,”
 he added.

Tunisia defender Moutassar Taibli said the Carthage Eagles are fully aware of Nigeria’s attacking quality, led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.

“We know Nigeria’s attackers are high-level players, but with experience and concentration, the result will be positive,”
Taibli said.

Saturday’s match will be staged at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, with a vibrant atmosphere expected. Historically, the fixture has been finely balanced. The two nations have met 21 times over the last 64 years, recording six wins each, with nine draws.

At AFCON finals, Nigeria hold a slight advantage, claiming four victories compared to Tunisia’s two. Their most recent meeting came at the 2021 tournament, when Tunisia edged a Round of 16 tie 1-0 through Youssef Msakni’s second-half goal. Nigeria, however, had the upper hand at the 2019 AFCON, winning 1-0 in the third-place play-off thanks to Odion Ighalo’s strike.

Where to watch Nigeria vs Tunisia Clash and kick-off time:

The AFCON 2025 group match between Nigeria and Tunisia is scheduled to kick off at 9 p.m. (Nigerian time) later tonight, December 27 at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, Fès.

The match will be on dedicated Super Sports channels on DSTV, Star Time, SportyTV, CAF TV, Channel 4, beIN Sports, and many others.

Malian referee, Boubou Traore, will officiate the Group C table-toppers clash.

Lionel Messi’s Sister, Maria Sol Rushed To Hospital After Car Crash Few Days To Wedding

Maria Sol Messi, sister of football superstar Lionel Messi, has been hospitalized after a serious car accident in Miami, leading to the postponement of her upcoming wedding.

Reports from Argentina indicate that the 32-year-old suffered multiple injuries, including burns and spinal fractures, after losing control of her vehicle and colliding with a wall.

Argentinian journalist Angel de Brito, speaking on the US television programme LAM, provided an update on her condition.

“Messi’s sister is okay, she’s out of danger, but I checked with the family because she was supposed to get married in Rosario, Argentina, on January 3, and the wedding has had to be suspended,” he said.

De Brito added that her injuries include burns and displaced vertebrae, emphasising that recovery from such trauma is often slow. Maria Sol has since returned to her hometown of Rosario, where she has begun rehabilitation.

Further details from her mother, Celia Cuccittini, revealed that Maria Sol sustained two fractured vertebrae, as well as fractures to her heel and wrist. The accident reportedly occurred after she fainted behind the wheel, causing her to crash into a wall.

While accounts of the accident’s circumstances vary, the family confirmed that her injuries are serious but not life-threatening. Her wedding to Julian “Tuli” Arellano, a coach for Inter Miami’s under-19 team, has now been postponed.

Maria Sol has largely maintained a low profile despite being a fashion designer and entrepreneur. She previously served as brand manager at The Messi Store, the clothing line founded by her brother, collaborating with Virginia Hilfiger, sister of designer Tommy Hilfiger.

AFCON 2025: Lookman fires Super Eagles to top of Group C with win against Tanzania

Nigeria opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nationscampaign with a hard-earned 2-1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday night at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, setting an early tone in Group C.

Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookmanproved decisive as the Super Eagles absorbed pressure, responded to setbacks, and ultimately did enough to secure maximum points against a disciplined Tanzanian side.

Nigeria assert early control

The Super Eagles started with clear intent, pinning Tanzania back in the opening exchanges.

Akor Adams came closest to an early breakthrough when his header struck the crossbar, while Lookman later saw an effort deflected wide as Nigeria sustained pressure.

Nigeria thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Victor Osimhen rounded the goalkeeper, but Bakari Mwamnyeto recovered in time to block the striker’s goal-bound effort.

Ajayi breaks the deadlock

The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute from a corner kick. Alex Iwobi delivered a precise cross, and Semi Ajayi rose above his marker to power a header past the goalkeeper, giving Nigeria a deserved 1-0 lead.

Tanzania survived further scares before the break, with their goalkeeper producing key saves to deny Samuel Chukwueze and keep the deficit at one.

Tanzania respond, Lookman answers

Nigeria briefly thought they had doubled their advantage after the restart when Osimhen scored, but VAR ruled the effort offside.

Tanzania capitalised soon after, levelling the score through Charles M’Mombwa, who finished calmly after being left unmarked in the box.

The response from Nigeria was immediate. Iwobi again turned provider, setting up Lookman, who finished clinically to restore the Super Eagles’ lead in the 52nd minute.

Game management seals the points

Nigeria continued to create chances, with Lookman, Iwobi and Osimhen all going close, but failed to add a third goal. Despite that, the Super Eagles managed the closing stages with composure to see out the contest.

The win places Nigeria at the top of Group C ahead of their next outing against Tunisia, while Tanzania will look to recover when they face Uganda in their second group match.

FG Finally Delivers Housing Promise To AFCON Silver-Winning Super Eagles In Morocco (Video)

The Federal Government has fulfilled its promise to reward members of the Super Eagles squad that finished runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, awarding each player a house nearly two years after the pledge was made.

The presentation was carried out on Monday in Fez, Morocco, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), coming barely 24 hours before Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 AFCON.

The Super Eagles, then led by Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, finished second at the 2023 tournament held between January and February 2024 after a 2-1 defeat to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final.

Following the team’s return to Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu honoured players and officials with national awards under the Member of the Order of the Niger, alongside pledges of housing and land gifts for members of the squad and backroom staff.

That housing commitment was formally fulfilled at the team’s Moroccan base on Monday as the Super Eagles prepare to begin their quest for a fourth continental crown with a Group C clash against Tanzania on Tuesday.

“The Federal Government, through the NSC, has fulfilled its 2024 pledge on housing rewards to the Super Eagles,” the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed via a WhatsApp group dedicated to media updates.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi, also confirmed that the national honours were issued as MON or OON in line with existing awards already held by players.

They added that the housing and land grants approved by President Tinubu have been fully processed, with Certificates of Occupancy issued.

Now under Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are back on continental duty in Morocco, carrying the burden of expectation after narrowly missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The three-time African champions are drawn in Group C and will face Tunisia on Saturday after their opener against Tanzania, before rounding off the group stage against Uganda next Tuesday.
