BREAKING: Supreme Court Receives Conflicting Letters From Chicago Varsity On Tinubu’s Certificate

The Supreme Court disclosed on Monday, October 23, that it received two conflicting letters regarding the academic records of President Bola Tinubu from the Chicago State University (CSU).

The Chairman of the seven-member panel of the apex court, Justice John Okoro, stated this during the hearing of the application of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, filed against the victory of President Bola Tinubu.

Justice Okoro said one of the letters is authenticating the President’s certificate and another discrediting it.

The lead justice of the panel, therefore, said criminal matters have to be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

“But in this case, there are two conflicting letters from the CSU – one authenticating the president’s certificate and another discrediting it. Which do we rely on?
” he asked.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the February election, but his opponents went to court.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal had struck out the appeals of Atiku and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, but they headed for the apex court, with Atiku asking to file extra evidence against Tinubu on alleged forgery.

Atiku had sought Tinubu’s academic record from Chicago State University so as to prove his allegation that the president submitted forged documents to INEC.

However, by the time the documents were released, the 180-day statutory period within which an election petition should be filed and determined had elapsed.

But Atiku asked the court to grant his appeal to tender fresh evidence, given the nature of the issue. Tinubu kicked against this, saying granting such would amount to abuse of the court process.

Atiku predicated his plea on the grounds that presenting forged documents by any candidate, especially by one for the highest office in the land, is a grave constitutional issue that must not be encouraged.

But Tinubu kicked the plea, arguing that the issue was a pre-election matter amongst others and subsequently prayed the court to deny the grant of the application.

While faulting Tinubu, Atiku submitted that issues of merit ought not to be determined or pronounced upon at the interlocutory stage.

The former vice president also pointed out that the presentation of a forged certificate disqualifies a candidate for all time, no matter when presented.

Northern Christian Youths Condemn Video Clips Calling For Wike’s Removal

The Northern Christian Youth Network has issued a warning to those inciting people against other Nigerians due to differences in religion.
The Northern Christian youths were reacting to ‘hateful and segregational statements’ directed at former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Briefing newsmen in Kaduna on Monday, the National President, NCYN, Comrade Abdulsalam John Tanko, said, “It is no longer news that following his inauguration as the FCT Minister, renowned Islamic cleric,  Gumi, in a viral video, described Wike as a hater of Northern Nigeria and an infidel, however, what is news is the layedback approach at which some individuals have accepted this hate speech and divisive rhetoric, which seeks to sow seeds of discord among Nigerians and reignite religious crises which have taken a back seat for a long time.”
He lamented that similar statements by some Islamic fundamentalists have also saturated the media space, saying it is worrying that in 21st century Nigeria, those who are trusted with uniting the different religions are instead taking Nigerians through the harrowing journey of barbarism and promulgating bigotry.
He emphasized, “We, therefore, vehemently kick against such individuals who want to tarnish the image of Wike and that of President Bola Tinubu, not on the basis of competence, but because of religion and selfish agenda. Nigerians must uphold the principle that the country belongs to all its citizens, regardless of religious, ethnic, or political affiliations, as the unity and cooperation among all regions are important to our country’s progress and development.”
According to him, the position of FCT Minister is not the birthright of anybody, religion, sect or creed, it is a Nigerian territory and even its original owners, the Gbagyis, have not complained about Wike’s appointment, saying that those planning to derail the policies of the present administration on ministerial portfolios are barking up the wrong tree and their ill-conceived gimmicks have failed on arrival.
He urged President Bola Tinubu not to give in to such cheap blackmail and continue with the evenly balanced sharing of political appointments that has not been witnessed in Nigeria for a long time and also called on Wike not to allow such hateful and divisive statements affect his ideas of repositioning the FCT.

“Wike has been known to be astute, dogged and undeterred, so we urge him not to abandon the tenets that made him succeed as governor of Rivers State,” he note.
He stated that the country does not belong to Muslims alone and called on the relevant authorities to arrest them if necessary.
The National President explained that Nigeria belongs to Christians, Muslims and traditionalists, saying, “so bigotry and zealotism must not be tolerated and should be condemned in strong terms. We encourage the media not to relent in her efforts of broadcasting factual contents and it should also keep upholding its statues as the Fourth Estate of the Realm.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is attending the 29th Nigerian Economic Summit taking place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

The event, themed “Pathways to Sustainable Economic Transformation and Inclusion”, starts today, October 23 and ends tomorrow, October 24, 2023.

Others present at the event are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) Olaoye Jaiyeola.

Also at the summit are the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, Engr Nebeolisa Anako, among others.

Recall that the Federal Government and the NESG partnered and inaugurated the Joint Planning Committee (JPC) for the official commencement of the summit.

Speaking about the Summit at a press conference organised recently, the NESG boss said this time around, it will basically focus on renewed commitment and dedication on how to galvanize the economy.

He had said, “The 29th Nigerian Economic Summit is not just an annual event; it represents a call for change, a clarion call for renewed commitment, and a dedicated effort to turn our economy around for the better.

“We gather here today to justify the need for this year’s Nigerian Economic Summit. It seeks to be a pivotal turning point in our nation’s journey towards economic transformation.

“We must address the challenges head-on, engage in frank discussions, and devise innovative strategies to yield tangible results for all Nigerians.

“NES #28, themed “2023 and Beyond Priorities for Shared Prosperity”, galvanised stakeholders to articulate the country’s development imperatives that satisfy the need for economic security, social justice, conscientious governance, political stability and environmental sustainability with the intentional prospect of drawing lessons and insights from the past and present to influence the economic policy agenda.

“NES #29 will now follow up by demanding a transparent and well-thought-through economic agenda with specified implementation steps in purposeful response to the questions and recommendations thrown up at NES #28.

“During NES #28, stakeholders highlighted the importance of removing fuel subsidies and reforming Nigeria’s monetary policy. We commend the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promptly taking decisive actions in response to these calls.

“However, it is crucial that we diligently address the potential impact of these policies on the citizens by implementing palliative initiatives and measures to alleviate any adverse effects.“

Politics Is The Only Lucrative in Nigeria – Afe Babalola Says After Young Man He Sponsored To Do His Masters Decided To Go Into Politics

Nigerian lawyer and educationist, Afe Babalola, has opined that the only lucrative business in the country is politics.

The founder of Afe Babalola University made the statement during the 11th convocation ceremony of the institution on Saturday, October 21.

“I was the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos and a young man came out with first class in Chemistry and had the highest score that year. I called him and said, ‘I am going to give you a scholarship to do your master’s.

He was very happy and he agreed; he passed his masters. I had forgotten all about him, then he came in and said, ‘Sir, thank you for the scholarship given to me’ and I said ‘Yes, proceed to your Ph.D.’ and he said ‘No’ and I said ‘Why?’

My colleague who was in class with me in secondary school did not go to university; he is the chairman of the local government of my place. He is riding a car; he has a house.’ I was depressed.

I said, ‘What do you want to do now?’ He said, ‘I want to go into politics.’ I wept inside me. That is what your country has made of Nigeria. The only business in this country today which is lucrative is politics,” Babalola said.

He said that while he does not disapprove of any political ambitions, he believes that politics has become less ethical and more of personal gain than about serving the public good.

I do not say you cannot be a politician but to be a politician is different from what we have now. Who thinks that politics is for making money? Politics is for service. I was a Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor before and I never had a kobo because I saw it as service. People go now to make money from public money given to them.”he said

Senate To Make Electronic Transmission Of Result, Diaspora Voting, Others Mandatory

The Senate has announced plans to amend the 2022 Electoral Act.

The new amendment will make electronic transmission of results mandatory, allow uploading of polling unit-level results and result sheets used at different levels of result collation and allow for diaspora voting, at least for presidential elections.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by the upper legislative chamber at the end of its retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa-Ibom State.

The Senate noted that it was necessary for the Independent National Electoral Commission to be unbundled to improve its efficiency and effectiveness in the preparation and conduct of elections.

The communiqué stated, “Relating to the use of technology in elections, remove the ambiguity evident in Section 64 of the EA22.

“Also, make electronic transmission of results mandatory from the next general elections in 2027, including the uploading of polling unit-level results and result sheets used at different levels of result collation.

“Introduce diaspora voting, at least for presidential elections, to enable citizens to vote, especially those on essential service abroad, such as military, paramilitary, and other security personnel abroad, Embassy staff, and other citizens.

“Relating to political parties; stipulate sanctions for failure to submit the register of party members not later than 30 days before the date of party primaries, congresses, or conventions in relation to Section 77(3) EA22, which the political parties have observed in the breach in the 2023 elections without penalty.”

The 10th Senate further noted that it was time to develop and enact a comprehensive national security strategy that outlines the nation’s security objectives, threats, and policy priorities.

The Red Chamber added that such a strategy could serve as a guiding framework for legislative action in the security sector.
