Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, has said the agency intentionally enlisted controversial artiste, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley, for its drug abuse advocacy, The PUNCH reports.
Recall that criticisms trailed a video of Naira Marley advising youths to stop taking illicit substances. This was particularly so because the singer is known to glorify and encourage drug abuse.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, Babafemi said, “It is an advocacy engagement with him. It is what we do as part of the responsibilities of the agency to promote advocacy messages that would discourage people from substance abuse. It is about the message.
“Don’t forget that he has a lot of young followers— Marlians— that look up to him. The idea is for the leader of the movement (Marlians) to come out and ask people to stop substance abuse, and live a new life.”
The drug agency’s spokesperson also noted that using Marley as an advocate did not mean that the agency won’t arrest him if he was caught with illegal substances. He said, “Last year, we arrested some of his artistes (Zinoleesky and Mohbad). That is to show that we are not closing our eyes. If the same Naira Marley is caught with illicit substances tomorrow, he will face sanctions.”
Babafemi added that critics should consider the message and not focus on the messenger.
One of the people who had criticised the choice of Naira Marley was actress, Tonto Dikeh. She wrote on social media, “NDLEA, you are looking like a disgrace. This is not an insult, but this is from a daughter of the soil speaking out on your misconduct.
“I don’t involve myself in rubbish, especially that of other people. This, I must say, is the biggest embarrassment from any government agency/drug law enforcement agency. I would like to say more, but I’ll wait for NDLEA to pick me up for an interview/drug test/or just a chat. You know my address. I ask you to do it respectfully; otherwise we’ll have a problem. And, if I am replied I would gladly respond disrespectfully.”
In a Facebook post, Ossai Success, an aide to a former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, vowed to take legal action against NDLEA if he saw Naira Marley smoking again after his visit to the agency.
He wrote, “I will sue NDLEA if I see Naira Marley or any of the artistes signed to his record label smoking in his music video or on ground. I am watching him carefully because I am happy with this campaign.”
An instagram user, Joshua Ominuta, also wrote, “So you guys couldn’t find a responsible human being to promote your stuff?”
David Adeleke, the world-famous Nigerian singer, who is popularly known as Davido, has condoled with his colleague, Wizkid over the death of his mother.
Recall that Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun, the mother of Grammy-winning singer, Wizkid, died on Friday.
Consoling the Starboy boss on Saturday, Davido said he would heal with time.
On his Twitter handle, he wrote; “Praying for you my brother @wizkidayo. Sadness flies away on the wings of time.”

Inter Miami will take MLS rivals, Nashville in the Leagues Cup final at Geodis Park on Saturday.
The Herons have won their last six games on the road to the final and will be determined to keep the winning streak intact.
However, Carr has predicted that Inter Miami will beat Nashville 3-1.
Calen Carr told MLSsoccer, “It is Messi in a final – not sure I need a stat to support that. 3-1 Miami,” he said.
On his part, Wright-Phillips added, “This will be Messi’s toughest test since arriving in MLS, but Miami will win 3-2 in an incredible final.”
Similarly, Pardo said: “We are talking about Lionel Messi in the final. He gets two for Inter Miami, who add a third from Josef Martínez for the club’s first-ever trophy. 3-2 Miami.”
Olukemi Niyi-Aluko, a skit maker and actress, aka Diva Gold, has talked about her weirdest moments on set.
She said that kissing an actor with bad breath was her most unusual experience on a movie set.
She told Saturday Beats, “My weirdest experience on a movie set was when I had to kiss an actor. When I got close to him, my breath practically ceased. I wondered why such a fine actor would have bad breath. I was trying not to make the kiss serious, but he was still trying to open his mouth wide.”
Sharing her aspirations in the entertainment industry, the busty actress said, “I have a long list of celebrities I would love to feature in a skit. The first person on my list is Layi Wasabi. I also look forward to working with Biodun Stephen, Femi Adebayo; and American actor and filmmaker, Tyler Perry. My vision is to take my creative endeavours on a global scale.”
Speaking on her deal breaker in relationships, Gold said, “I despise dishonesty and unfaithfulness. Infidelity and abuse have no place in healthy relationships. A lack of ambition and purpose in life can also be detrimental.”
She also advised women in toxic relationships, the skit maker said, “People who advise women to stay in abusive relationships are wicked and dangerous. No one should be in a relationship with an abusive partner; they should leave.”
