LASU suspends 2024/2025 second semester exams

The Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended the 2024/2025 second semester examinations and other socio-academic activities until further notice.

Deputy Registrar/Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, announced the suspension of exams in a statement on Saturday.

“The Lagos State University Senate at its virtual meeting held on Saturday 2nd August 2025 considered and reviewed the report of the declared industrial action by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Staff Unions comprising the LASU Chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) on Thursday, 31st July 2025,” Thomas-Onashile said.

She stated that the university’s Senate, after reviewing the verbal report, acknowledged the information given by the Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman, which showed that the main demands of the Joint Action Committee are directed at the Lagos State Government.

The university management has, over the past few weeks, facilitated dialogue and pursued peaceful resolutions between the unions and the state government.

Thomas-Onashile said in line with the above, the Lagos State Government convened a meeting comprising University Management, representatives of the Joint Action Committee, representatives of the relevant ministries, and chaired by the Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro, on Friday, 1st August 2025, at the office of the Head of Service in Alausa, Ikeja.

“At the said meeting, it was agreed that further consultations would be held, with all parties reconvening on Thursday, 7th August 2025,” she stated.

According to her, the Senate, after due deliberations, resolved that the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, initially scheduled to commence on Monday, 4th August 2025, be put on hold and all other activities in the university be suspended until further notice.

In addition, all students residing in the university hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses have been asked to vacate the hostels by 6:00 a.m. on Monday at the latest.

Members of the LASU community, particularly students, have also been enjoined to remain calm and law-abiding during this period.

ASUU-LASU Declares Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Lagos State University, LASU, chapter, has embarked on an indefinite strike action.
ASUU embarked on strike over alleged state government’s failure to implement the federal government-approved salary increment of 25 and 35 per cent for its members since January 2023.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the union’s Chairperson, Prof Ibrahim Bakare, and Secretary, Sylvester Idowu.
The union said the strike followed the refusal of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to implement the increase, noting that the increment has been implemented in all the federal universities and 18 state universities.
According to ASUU-LASU, the declaration of the strike was in conformity with the decision of the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of all the staff unions in the university, adding that a letter has been sent to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and governor Sanwo-Olu.
Recall that JAC comprises ASUU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.

The union is also calling on the Lagos State Government to harmonise its members’ salary scale with that of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH, and the Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, which it said, earn better than their counterparts in LASU.
It explained that the government has failed to implement the recommendation of a committee set up by the government on the harmonisation of salaries.
The unions also dismissed claims by the institution’s student leaders that only ASUU is embarking on strike, insisting that the action is total and involved other unions.

“We are aware that the state government and the university management are making frantic efforts to resolve the unfortunate development but until then, the strike will go on.

“We wish to remind them that students have no stake in the matter or possess any right to meddle into welfare issues involving staff members of the university and the government, and as such they should not allow themselves to be used in a matter that does not directly concern them,” the statement said.
