Rashford benched for lateness in Barcelona’s win over Getafe – report

Marcus Rashford was left out of Barcelona’s starting lineup against Getafe on Sunday after arriving late for a pre-match team meeting, according to reports in Spain.

The Manchester United loanee, who had scored twice in the Champions League win over Newcastle days earlier, was instead named on the bench by head coach Hansi Flick.

Rashford was introduced at half-time with Barcelona already two goals up through Ferran Torres, and he later provided the assist for Dani Olmo’s strike that sealed a 3-0 victory at Camp Nou.

Flick enforces strict punctuality rules

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported that Rashford was only two minutes late, but Flick’s zero-tolerance policy on punctuality left him with no chance of starting.

The German coach has applied the same measure to other players including Inaki Pena, Jules Kounde and Raphinha in recent months.

Previous disciplinary history

It is not the first time Rashford has been dropped for lateness. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag benched him in December 2022 for oversleeping, though the England forward came on to score the winner at Wolves.

Positive response from the forward

Despite the setback, Rashford responded well by making an instant impact off the bench.

Meanwhile, Flick downplayed the disciplinary angle after the match, insisting his team selection was based on “rotation.”

LaLiga: Flick Reportedly ‘Locked’ Barcelona Players Inside Dressing Room After Vallecano Draw

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick reportedly locked his players in the dressing room after their 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

The result brought an end to the LaLiga champions’ perfect start to the season.

Barca has thrashed Mallorca 3-0 in their first fixture and edged a 3-2 win over Levante.

However, Flick has not been impressed by his team’s performance this season, and he let them have a piece of his mind after the Vallecano match.

The Athletic reports that Flick locked his players in the dressing room and delivered the same message he gave in his post-match press conference – only in notably stronger terms.

“The most important thing is that, when the transfer window is closed, everyone who stays is 100 per cent committed to this club,”
Flick told reporters after the draw.

“No egos, because egos kill success. Last season, we played as one unit. We have to be like this again now.”

La Liga: Rashford registration confirmed as Barcelona name star for opener

Barcelona have named Marcus Rashford in their matchday squad for Saturday’s La Liga opener against Mallorca, after registration confirmed.

Although the Manchester United loanee is still awaiting final registration clearance, Rashford’s paperwork are expected to be done before the kick-off of their game.

The Catalan club managed to register goalkeeper Joan Garcia on Friday, with head coach Hansi Flick remaining optimistic the England international will be cleared in time, with the forward badly needed in Robert Lewandowski’s absence.

Barcelona are relying on additional funds raised from the sale of a 50% sell-on clause for former player Francisco Trincao to finalise the process.

Alongside Rashford and Garcia, Flick has also included four La Masia graduates in the travelling squad – Jofre Torrents, Guillermo Fernandez, Dro and Toni Fernandez.
