Hilda Baci’s team addresses backlash of using ‘unwashed rice’ in jollof cook-off

Fresh evidence has emerged confirming that Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci and her team thoroughly washed the 200 bags of rice used during her Guinness World Record attempt to cook the largest pot of jollof rice.

The clarification comes after viral videos on social media appeared to show members of her team pouring rice straight from the sacks into the massive cooking pot, sparking backlash and criticism.

Many online users raised hygiene concerns, arguing that cooking unwashed rice at such a scale could lead to excessive starch buildup and compromise food quality.

Unwashed rice rumour put to rest

However, newly released behind-the-scenes footage has set the record straight. The videos show Hilda’s team carefully washing the rice in large quantities before rebagging it into sacks for use in the cook-off.

The development has eased growing doubts over the cleanliness and credibility of the record-breaking attempt, which has attracted global attention. It also reinforces the meticulous level of planning and execution that went into the historic cook-off, despite the scale of the challenge.

With the clarification now in circulation, Hilda Baci’s team appears to have successfully dispelled the swirling rumours, restoring confidence among her fans and supporters.

Fans are divided on unwashed rice for Jollof cook-off

Msontey wrote: “Hilda has been screaming in all the videos leading to this event that she’s using basmati rice. These are not basmati sacks, so clearly, the rice was removed from their original sacks, washed and put in these sacks so it will be easier to put them in the pot.”

RealDonaldDoo stated: “At least you would have asked if it’s washed. No be to just jump de conclude.”

EmmanuelNechi penned: “About 70% of those born in the UK who cook rice don’t wash it before cooking. 1st hand I have observed it in so many of them I have come across.”

ayurexars said: “Only a fool will think the rice wasn’t washed before it’s been poured into the pot.”

shanwatche noted: “Chai. Why would this man post this sort of thing? Even a person who’s not a chef knows that you can’t cook rice without 1st cleaning. This isn’t nice.”

We’ve Received Over 1,500 Applications From Nigerians – Guinness World Records Reveals

The Guinness World Records (GWR) has made a revelation about Nigerians following the recent trend of record breakers.

The GWR disclosed that they have received approximately 1,500 applications from Nigerians.

This is coming after chef Hilda Baci’s succeeded in the attempt.

Chef Baci recently got the title for the record-breaking achievement for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

Having experienced this, ‘considerable’ number of Nigerians have enthusiastically embraced the trend.

In a chit-chat with Legit NG, the record body said: “The attention and excitement that Hilda Baci’s cooking marathon gained was certainly an incentive for many Nigerians to consider attempting a Guinness World Records title.

“Since her record attempt, there has been a spike in applications from Nigeria, particularly for marathon records.

“We have received over 1,500 record applications from Nigeria since the start of May.”

Hilda Baci in May hit the spotlight after setting a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest cooking marathon (cook-a-thon) by an individual.

The Akwa-Ibom native cooked for 100 hours to beat the 87 hours 45 minutes record previously set by Lata Tondon, the Indian chef, in 2019.

Hilda was certified by the British reference book in June but with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes having critically found some loopholes during the attempt.

Baci’s feat opened the floodgates of desires by some Nigerians to break her cooking record while others from neighbouring Cameroon sought to set world records in various fields.

From ‘Kiss-a-thon, massaging, lecturing, praise and worship, crying marathon to ‘sex-a-thon, attempts were made to break world records, prompting the GWR to issue a warning, which reads: “Please enough with the record-a-thons”.

In recent weeks, Several attempts have been made by some persons to break Hilda Baci’s record.

The first was Damilola Adeparusi, (Chef Dammy) who did not seek Guinness World Record, GWR, permission before starting her competition.

Dammy claimed that she cooked for 120 hours but this could not be verified as there were times she switched off live video during the contest.

With the aim of surpassing Baci’s 93 hours and 11 minutes record, another lady from Ondo State, Chef Deo, revealed that she had informed GWR of her intention and received the green light before commencing the cook-a-thon.

Deo completed the challenge of cooking for 150 hours.
