EPL: Defensive lapses cost Chelsea in 2-2 draw against Bournemouth

Chelsea’s struggles for consistency continued at Stamford Bridge as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth, dropping points for a third successive Premier League match despite racing into a first-half lead.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez were cancelled out by defensive errors that once again exposed the Blues, particularly from set-piece situations, leaving Enzo Maresca’s side with growing questions to answer.

Chaotic opening defines the contest

Bournemouth took the lead inside six minutes after Chelsea failed to deal with a long throw, allowing David Brooks to convert from close range after Robert Sanchez parried his initial effort back into danger. The goal set the tone for a frantic opening spell.

Chelsea responded quickly. Palmer levelled from the penalty spot following a VAR review that ruled Antoine Semenyo had fouled Estevao.

Eight minutes later, Fernandez completed the turnaround with a superb strike from the edge of the area, briefly putting the hosts in control.

Set-piece weakness proves costly

Chelsea’s advantage did not last. Another long throw caused confusion in the box, with a defensive header looping to the back post where Justin Kluivert was left unmarked to tap home and restore parity for Bournemouth.

Fernandez later missed a clear chance to win the game, firing over after Neto’s cross fell kindly to him, while Bournemouth wasted a late opportunity of their own through Enes Unal.

Pressure builds as form dips

Despite late pressure, Chelsea could not find a winner and were forced to settle for a point, following a draw with Newcastle and defeat to Aston Villa. Their last league victory remains the December 13 win over Everton.

The pattern is increasingly familiar: attacking quality offset by defensive fragility. Until that imbalance is corrected, Chelsea’s momentum will continue to stall.

EPL: Haaland double fires Man City past Bournemouth

Erling Haaland returned to scoring form with a decisive brace as Manchester City defeated Bournemouth 3-1 to reclaim second place in the Premier League and close the gap on leaders Arsenal to six points.

Pep Guardiola’s men were looking to bounce back after last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, a match that saw Haaland fail to score for only the second time this season.

The Norwegian responded emphatically, proving once again why he remains City’s most lethal weapon.

Early scare, swift response

Bournemouth thought they had the perfect start when teenager Eli Junior Kroupi found the net after just 44 seconds, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

City capitalised soon after, as Rayan Cherki’s clever header released Haaland, who calmly slotted past Djordje Petrovic in the 17th minute to make it 1-0.

The hosts’ lead was short-lived, though, as Tyler Adams pounced on a poor punch from Gianluigi Donnarumma to smash home an equaliser, his first goal in English football.

Haaland restores control

City’s dominance soon resurfaced. Cherki again combined brilliantly with Haaland, who rounded the goalkeeper and finished with composure for his 13th league goal of the campaign and 26th across all competitions.

The striker came close to a hat-trick before the break but was denied by Petrovic’s sharp save.

O’Reilly seals the win

After Kroupi forced Donnarumma into another stop, City struck the killer blow on the hour mark. Midfielder Nico O’Reilly surged forward and buried a low shot into the corner to seal an assured victory for Guardiola’s side.

The win puts Manchester City back on track after their stumble at Villa Park, while Bournemouth’s run hits a temporary setback despite another spirited performance.

Man arrested over racist abuse towards Bournemouth’s Semenyo at Anfield

Merseyside Police have arrested a 47-year-old man from Liverpool after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused during Friday’s Premier League opener at Anfield.

The incident, which led to a brief stoppage in play, was immediately reported to the referee by Semenyo.

The suspect was identified, ejected from the stadium, and later taken into custody on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Semenyo later thanked teammates, Liverpool players, supporters, and officials for their response to the incident.

Under UK law, racially or religiously aggravated offences carry tougher penalties.

Convictions can attract up to two years imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both.
