I Was 14 When I Was Admitted to University – Ayra Starr

In a recent interview, Nigerian artist Ayra Starr revealed that she was accepted to a university at the age of 14.

She added that although she aspired to be a teenage pop sensation, her mother insisted that she complete her education before pursuing her music career, so she earned her first degree early.

In a recent interview, she revealed this to American media behemoth Billboard News.

“I got into the university at 14,” Starr recalled. I feel like ever since I was a kid, my mother has been blackmailing me with music. “You have to do this if you want to do music,” she said. I initially said no when she proposed that we move from the Benin Republic to Lagos, but she persuaded me that Lagos is the land of music.

She stressed that I must complete my education before I may pursue a career in music. Many Nigerians typically complete their secondary education at the age of fifteen or sixteen. I realized that I would never be able to pursue a career as a teenage pop star if I waited until I was 15 [before finishing my secondary school]. I also aspired to be a teenage pop sensation. So, I wrote JAMB, or what you guys called SAT here, and I joined my older brother.

“To be honest, I didn’t get into all these Ivy League colleges with this result, but it was good enough to get by. It satisfied my mother’s needs. I was accepted to a reputable university. I took the course for three years. International Relations was the subject. And right away I also began performing music covers online the year after I graduated, and I was signed to the Mavin Records label in the same year.

“Commas,” Ayra Starr’s latest song, debuts at number one on Apple Music’s Nigerian Top 100 Songs.

Ayra Star, the renowned Nigerian singer and Marvin’s signee, has once again exceeded expectations by landing at the top of Apple Music’s Nigerian Top 100 tracks.

Given that the singer has accomplished this several times, it further confirms her other monikers, “Celestial Being” and “Sabi Girl” of her era. The song “Twe Twe” remix by Kizz Daniel and Davido, which had been ranked #1 on Apple Music’s Nigerian Top 100 tracks for nearly a month, was overthrown in this occasion.

Without a doubt, Ayra Star has been contributing to the industry and establishing herself as one of Nigeria’s most fascinating talents over the years since she first came to attention. She is also performing quite well.

Ayra Star’s debut song, which also served as the lead track for her EP “19 and Dangerous,” was released in July 2021. The lead song, “Bloody Samaritan,” seemed to go viral and ended up becoming an anthem for music fans all throughout the African continent and beyond.

With her then-new single “Rush,” the singer dethroned YBNL’s wildly popular artist Asake, whose most recent release at the time was among the hottest hits in the Nigerian music scene, and reached the top of Apple Music’s list in that country in September 2022. It is important to highlight that Asake has established himself as a major force in the Nigerian music scene with a number of solo singles, including “Joha” and Terminator.

However, a number of Ayra’s solo releases—including Bloody Samaritan—her first Extended Play EP, “19 and Dangerous,” and her collaborative efforts with other artists—including Wizkid, Omah Lay, Crayon, and C-kay—among others—have also fared well on a number of charts and online music streaming services both domestically and internationally. These have considerably improved her seamless performance and professional advancement as a musician, shortly after she “derailed” from her original focus of fashion and modeling.

Remarkably, Ayra Star’s most recent achievement on Apple Music’s Nigerian Top 100 songs occurs just a week after she and other Nigerian musicians, such as Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide, and Asake, were not selected for the most recent Grammy Awards Nominees for the 66th Grammy Awards, which took place on February 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. Securing the top rank on Apple Music could, nevertheless, provide some solace for the defeat, which many saw as a severe blow to the Afrobeats sector because no Nigerian musician made the winners list.

Remember when Ayra’s solo breakthrough single “Rush” earned her a nomination for the first-ever Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards? The 21-year-old Marvins Princess was one of the first nominees, along with Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, Olamide, Tyla, and Musa Keys from South Africa. Even though Tyla stole the show, the angel has once again demonstrated that accolades do not only
