Why Cement Is Cheaper Abroad Than In Nigeria – Dangote

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has attributed the higher cost of his company’s cement in Nigeria to steep taxes and heavy regulatory burdens, making it more expensive than in international markets.

Dangote said the price difference was largely due to multiple levies and charges imposed on local production.

According to Vanguard, the billionaire industrialist said exporting the product allows his company to avoid several taxes that significantly raise production costs at home.

He said the cumulative effect of taxes, fees and regulatory requirements within Nigeria adds substantially to the final retail price of cement.

He said: “When you look at my invoice, the cement I export is cheaper than the one I’m selling domestically, because that’s how exports work. In export I’m saving a lot of money, I’m not paying 30% income tax, I’m not paying 2%, education, I’m not paying 1% health, I’m not paying 7.5% VAT, and I’m not paying 10% withholding tax.

“So when you reduce all these taxes, I can afford to go and compete with the international market, with the likes of Turkey, Russia, and China.”

The billionaire industrialist has consistently stressed local manufacturing as a means of achieving economic self-sufficiency.

“Our client, through dint of hard work, integrity, diligent and perseverance over the years earned for himself the reputation and honour he is reckoned with all over the world.

“Our client’s attention has been drawn to statements made by you during the televised broadcast on TrustTV on the aforementioned date in reaction to our client’s petition submitted to Independent Corrupt Practices and the other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate and possibly prosecute Engr. Farouk Ahmad if found wanting, wherein you made false, reckless, malicious, scandalous and libelous publications concerning our client as a man that has monopolistic tendencies, corruptly enriched himself in business and engaged in economics cerbutach.

“Your statement also portrayed our client as a very cruel businessman whose stock in trade is vendetta and campaign of calumny to bring down others and exert monopolistic powers.

Among others you started as follows: “Can Dangote tell us the source of his money in the 80s when he was in Port Harcourt. Who is clean? Every time you want to monopolize, you bring allegations against people. Let him come and prove it. In the 80s we are aware of what happened in Port Harcourt and how he got his money. Nobody came out and said all these things”.

“These statements are false, scandalous and gravely deliberately impute unlawful or morally questionable conduct to our client and are calculated to expose him to public hatred, ridicule, suspicion and odium.

“By your reckless and unguarded defamatory statement and assertions, our client’s reputation has been greatly lowered in the sight of reasonable members of the International Community, including his business partners, associates and various governments of nations of the world where our client carries on business.

“Take Note that our client categorically states that at no time in his life has he carried out any business, commercial activity or wealth generating enterprise in Port Harcourt, whether in the 1980s or at any other period whatsoever as you alleged.

“That you give a written undertaking to desist from making or publishing any further false or defamatory statements concerning our client.

“Be advised that allegations of this nature made without proof on a national media platform are indefensible in law and amount to a gross abuse of the right to freedom of expression which will culminate in both civil and criminal liability.

“Take further notice that should you fail to comply with the conditions stated above and within the time frame, our client shall, without further recourse to you, institute a legal action at a competent court of law against you and claim aggravated damages.

$5m Swiss Tuition: Dangote Releases Details Of Allegation Against NMDPRA CEO

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Refinery and Chairman of Dangote Group, has disclosed details regarding the alleged foreign education tuition controversy involving Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

In a document circulating publicly on Tuesday and personally signed by Dangote, the billionaire investor, it was stressed that Ahmed spent $5 million on the secondary and tertiary education of his four children abroad, particularly in Switzerland and the United States.

This comes barely 24 hours after Dangote called for the probe of Ahmed for allegedly living above his income.

According to the now viral document, Dangote alleged that Ahmed’s children are said to have attended some of the world’s most expensive schools, including Montreux School, Aiglon College, Institut Le Rosey, and La Garenne International School, each reportedly spending about six years at their respective institutions.

The breakdown provided in the document estimates annual tuition, upkeep, air travel, and living expenses at about $200,000 per child, amounting to $800,000 annually for four children. Accordingly, over a six-year period, the total cost was estimated at $4.8 million, with the overall secondary education expenses put at approximately $5 million.

Dangote’s document further alleged that one of Ahmed’s children, identified as Faisal Farouk, recently completed an MBA program at Harvard University, with tuition reportedly costing $150,000, alongside an additional $60,000 for upkeep and other expenses, bringing the total to about $210,000 in 2025.

As of the time of filing this report, Engr. Farouk Ahmed has not publicly responded to the allegations, and no official statement has been issued by the NMDPRA. However, earlier, when the claim surfaced months ago, the regulator had dismissed it as false.

A coalition of civil society organizations under Lawyers in Defence of Good Governance, who first made the allegation against Ahmed, had retracted their claim, describing it as misinformation.

The House Committee on Petroleum Resources and Downstream had earlier called for both Dangote and Ahmed to cease further public attacks.

Aliko Dangote Reacts to Reports that Donald Trump Is Unhappy With the Launch Of Dangote Refinery (Video)

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Refinery, has denied claims that U.S. President Donald Trump is displeased with the launch of the $20 billion refinery.

There were claims on social media suggesting that Trump’s recent threat to attack certain locations in Nigeria could be linked to Africa’s largest refinery.

Trump had threatened to strike terrorists targeting Christians at various locations in Nigeria, which led to the spread of various propaganda and social media reactions.

Addressing the press, Dangote said that the USA has been a major supplier of crude to the refinery, adding that the talk about Trump being angry over its establishment “does not hold water.”

“The US has been one of our major suppliers of crude, which is why when someone says Trump is not happy with our refinery, it’s not true,” he said.

“Trump is more than happy with our refinery, because on average for a year, we do not buy more than 100 million barrels from the US.”

Dangote also said Nigerians now have the option of buying high-quality, locally refined petrol at a cheaper price or opting for blended imported fuel at a higher cost.

Dangote stated that fuel importers could continue to incur losses while Nigerians enjoy more affordable petrol prices.

According to him, the availability of locally refined petrol gives consumers a clear choice between quality fuel sold at a lower rate and blended premium motor spirit (PMS) sold at higher prices by importers.

Stop Buying Rolls-Royce, Use The Money To Build Industries Instead – Dangote Tells Wealthy Nigerians (Video)

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, has urged Nigeria’s elite to channel the money spent on luxury items like Rolls-Royce cars and private jets into building industries that boost economic growth and generate jobs.

Speaking with The PUNCH after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock Villa on Saturday, Dangote lamented the culture of extravagant consumption, stressing that the nation’s development depends heavily on the responsibility of local investors.

“If you look at the Nigerian policy before, during the military, everybody from the president downwards used Peugeot 504. That was the highest. So, when a president is using 504, you cannot come as a commoner, as a businessman, or whoever you are, to be using Rolls-Royce,” he said.

Dangote criticised the proliferation of private jets at Nigerian airports, arguing that such wealth would be better invested in productive ventures.

“If you have money for a Rolls-Royce, you should go and put up an industry in your locality or anywhere in Nigeria where there is a need.

“It pains me when I go to the local airport, whether here or in Lagos, and even finding a parking space for your plane is impossible because everybody has a private jet. Those private jets could be in industries creating jobs,” he added.

Dangote emphasised that national development requires a strong focus on manufacturing and agriculture, supported by robust banking systems.

He also highlighted the urgent need for job creation, noting Nigeria’s population grows by 8.7 million babies every year, which demands significant investments in infrastructure and power.

“Some people may not know the position of the country as we speak. Population growth is 8.7 million babies every year. So we need to deliver power, infrastructure, and other essentials,”
he said.

The billionaire also framed tax compliance as both a civic duty and a partnership with the government.

“When you have a company, the number one shareholder is the government. We need an enabling environment from the government, and as corporate citizens, we must pay our taxes. I cannot cheat my partner. If I pay tax, children can go to school and hospitals can function. The government has huge demands, and we must do our part,”
he added.

The businessman dismissed what he described as over-reliance on foreign investors, insisting that no external investor would commit to Nigeria without strong domestic participation.

He said, “We should stop calling for foreign investors. No foreign investor will come here unless domestic investors are active. Good policies, governance, and rule of law attract local investors, and foreign investors follow to partner or establish their own operations.

Dangote reiterated that industrialisation must be led by Nigerians, saying “We must industrialise our country. Nobody will do it but us. Once we industrialise, foreigners will partner with us or invest in Nigeria. We must remove both real and perceived risks to investment.”

The businessman also revealed that the Dangote Refinery would soon produce surplus volumes, with projections indicating that by February, it will supply 15–20 million litres more than Nigeria needs.

This will allow exports to neighbouring countries, reducing fuel scarcity across West Africa.

“We are working to make Nigeria the refining hub of Africa. African countries import products, and we want to ensure that whatever we consume is produced locally,”
he said.

Earlier in October, Dangote had also encouraged Nigerians to embrace homegrown products as a way to strengthen the economy and create jobs.

Hackers Infiltrate The Phones Of Dangote And Otedola, Demand Ransom

Tension has spread across the business circles of Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola following reports that hackers gained access to the mobile phones of the two prominent businessmen.

Sources close to both men confirmed to TheCable that their phones were compromised within the past week, with the intruders making direct financial demands.

While the phone of Otedola, Chairman of FirstHoldCo Plc, was breached once, Africa’s richest man, Dangote, suffered two separate hacks in just 48 hours.

Although it remains unclear whether the business moguls have regained full control of their devices, insiders say the attackers wasted no time in demanding ransom.

“The hackers are asking for money from both men,” a source familiar with the situation told TheCable.

The nature of the demands, the extent of the data compromised, or whether law enforcement has been alerted is yet to be confirmed as of press time.

Dangote and Otedola, who often refer to each other as “brothers,” have maintained a decades-long friendship and business association.

Otedola recently attended an event where Dangote announced plans to scale up his refinery’s capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million bpd.

Praising Dangote’s ambition, Otedola described him as “Africa’s pride,” noting that the refinery project would shape future generations.

Otedola said, “Aliko’s relentless commitment to investing in Nigeria and Africa will outlive him as these are legacy investments that will define generations.

“Soon, Nigerians will own part of this refinery, a powerful reminder that this vision is not just for Dangote, but for all Nigerians and Africans.”

Aliko Dangote Becomes First African To Hit $30 Billion Net Worth

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has seen his net worth soar to $30 billion as of October 23, 2025, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

This milestone reflects a $2.16 billion year-to-date increase in his fortune, with a recent $430 million valuation gain contributing to the surge.

Just days earlier, Dangote’s net worth stood at $29.8 billion; only $200 million shy of the mark.

The impressive rise aligns with the expansion of his industrial empire, particularly the completion of a $160 million cement plant in Attingué, about 30 km north of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The 50-hectare facility boasts an annual capacity of three million metric tonnes, making it one of Dangote Cement’s largest sites outside Nigeria.

With the new plant, the company’s total installed capacity across Africa now stands at approximately 55 million tonnes per year, spread across 11 countries.

I Took Him to Tanzania, Senegal – Obasanjo Reveals How He Helped Dangote Succeed

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how he helped Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote make it in business.
Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday.
According to him, he created an enabling environment to ensure that Dangote built his cement factory in Nigeria, he took him to Tanzania, Senegal, and other African countries.
Speaking at the Bauchi State economic and investment summit, Obasanjo stressed the need for public, private sector partnership.
He said: “So Aliko then planned to produce 5 million tons of cement a year. Since we started producing cement in 1956 up to 2003, we’ve never produced 5 million tons.

“So when Aliko made that projection, the people in the ministry said he was telling a lie. He wants to be making it up. I said alright, let’s see how his lie will work.

“So I put two people on Aliko’s construction site and they are reporting to me every day. The day Aliko the contractor did not work, they will phone and tell me. And I will immediately phone Aliko.

“So one day Aliko came to me and said, Mr. President, I’m getting worried about you. I said what have I done? He said you know about this cement project more than myself. And it is not a government project. I’m getting worried about you. I said my brother Aliko, this is a Nigerian project. So anything Nigerian is a government project.

“Not only did Aliko succeed in the first 5 million, he succeeded in the second 5 million. He succeeded in the third 5 million. I started taking him out to other countries in Africa.

“I took him to Tanzania. I took him to Senegal. That’s how Aliko made it. Partnership between the private and the public. Partnership between leadership at every level.”
