LaLiga: Ighalo Predicts What Will Happen To Lookman Playing Under Simeone At Atletico Madrid

Former Odion Ighalo, who previously played for Manchester United, has voiced his belief that Ademola Lookman will flourish under the guidance of Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid.

Describing Simeone as an astute and tactical manager, Ighalo believes that Lookman’s transition to one of Spain’s premier clubs will significantly enhance his development as a player.

Since his recent move from Atalanta on a four-and-a-half-year contract, Lookman has made a strong impression, registering four goals and two assists in just six appearances for Atlético.

“Playing under Diego Simeone’s guidance will benefit Lookman because Simeone is a tactical and intelligent coach.

“I see this [Lookman’s move from Atalanta to Atletico] as a good step forward in his career,”Ighalo stated in an interview with Winwin.

Lookman is expected to play a key role when Atletico Madrid host Club Brugge in the return leg of their Champions League Round of 16 playoffs in mid-week.

Super Eagles: ‘He Was Sad’ – Peseiro Speaks On How Ademola Lookman Felt Being Ignored By England

Former Nigeria national team coach José Peseiro has shared how Ademola Lookman felt after being overlooked by England, which led to his decision to play for Nigeria.

Explaining why the Atletico Madrid forward opted for Nigeria, Peseiro said this happened after the player waited for a chance to represent England at the senior level.

Lookman was born in London to parents from Nigeria. He played for England’s youth teams, including the U19, U20, and U21 squads.

In February 2022, FIFA allowed him to change his national team allegiance and represent Nigeria instead.

A former African Footballer of the Year, the skilled forward made a last-minute move to Atlético Madrid, and just last weekend, he became the first English-born player to play in the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and La Liga.

Peseiro talked to Marca about Lookman’s move to Atletico Madrid before his contract ended.

He said, “For Lookman, it’s a challenge, and it’s a big moment in his career because now he’s reached one of the top clubs in Europe… and he can keep showing England that they made a mistake by not picking him for the senior team,” he said.

Peseiro also mentioned that Lookman was confused about why his good progress in youth teams did not lead to a call-up for the senior squad.

“He was still quite young, but he frequently told me about how sad he felt. After winning the Under-20 World Cup in 2017 and moving up to the Under-21 team, England stopped inviting him to join the squad. He couldn’t understand it. He thought he could have a future there, but in the end, he had to accept the situation.”

With parents from Nigeria, Lookman chose to play for the Super Eagles, a decision he made before Peseiro became the head coach.

He has directly helped score 11 goals, with six of those being goals he scored himself and five being assists he provided, in 13 matches.

La Liga: Lookman denied on debut as Antony stun Atletico Madrid

Ademola Lookman endured a frustrating La Ligadebut as Atletico Madrid slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Real Betis at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

The Nigerian forward, handed his first league start following a January move from Atalanta, saw an early goal ruled out for offside as Atletico failed to capitalise on their chances in a match settled by a moment of quality from Betis winger Antony.

Antony’s decisive strike arrived in the 28th minute, when the Brazilian cut inside and fired a low shot beyond Jan Oblak to give the visitors a lead they would protect for the remainder of the contest.

Disallowed goal mars Lookman’s first start

Lookman was central to Atletico’s attacking play in the opening exchanges and appeared to have marked his full league debut with a goal midway through the first half.

The Super Eagles forward finished clinically inside the area, only for VAR to rule the effort out for offside, cutting short celebrations inside the stadium.

Despite the setback, Lookman continued to offer pace, movement and direct running, frequently occupying Betis centre-backs Natan and Diego Llorente.

His positioning created space for Antoine Griezmann and Julián Álvarez, though Atletico struggled to convert territorial dominance into clear-cut chances.

Betis discipline blunts Atletico pressure

As the game progressed, Betis grew increasingly compact, limiting Lookman’s influence in advanced areas. The visitors defended in numbers and forced Atletico into wide areas, reducing the effectiveness of crosses into the box.

Goalkeeper Álvaro Vallés played a key role in preserving Betis’ lead, producing several saves in the second half as Atletico pushed for an equaliser.

Lookman, who was later substituted, was one of Simeone’s main attacking threats in the game.

The final whistle confirmed Lookman’s first league defeat in Spanish football, a sharp contrast to his positive cup showing earlier in the week.

Victor Osimhen Is Not Leaving AFCON Camp, Outburst With Lookman Has Been Settled — NFF Official

A senior official of the Nigerian Football Federation has debunked circulating rumours that Super Eagles forward and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is set to leave the Nigeria camp at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

This was disclosed by a FIFA and CAF-accredited journalist, Adepoju Samuel, who spoke with the official about the outburst between Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the round of 16 game against Mozambique, which ended 4-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.

“The official said everything has been sorted since last night, and we are all good. There was no discussion about Osimhen leaving the tournament. The issue has been resolved as a family.”

The Galatasaray striker was captured on camera yelling at Lookman in the 63rd minute after the Atalanta man missed a chance when Osimhen was open.

Lookman had already created two chances for Osimhen at that point, with one being a direct assist and the other coming through Akor Adams.

In the footage, Osimhen first pulled away from captain Wilfred Ndidi, then pointed his finger angrily at Lookman before shouting his displeasure at his teammate. At the end, he could be heard saying in pidgin, “No try am again,” which means “do not try that again.”

Osimhen asked to be subbed off subsequently and was then booed off the pitch by the fans as Moses Simon came on for the striker.

The incident sparked widespread criticism on the social media platform X, with fans questioning Osimhen’s attitude despite the team’s dominant performance.

However, reacting on Tuesday, Lookman shared pictures of himself alongside Victor Osimhen and Bruno Onyemaechi on the pitch following Nigeria’s win against Mozambique at the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, which was played on Monday.

The footballer shared the post on his official Instagram page on Tuesday with the caption,“TOGETHER ALWAYS”.

Also, both the Eagles coach, Eric Chelle and the captain, Wilfred Ndidi, have dismissed the rumoured misunderstanding between the duo talismen while urging Nigerians to keep backing the team as they focus on their next outing against either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter finals.
