Naira Marley’s Cybercrime Trial Stalled

The alleged cybercrime trial of singer, Azeez Fashola a.k.a Naira Marley, was stalled on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The trial could not proceed because parties in the suit are still awaiting approval of a fiat by the chief judge of the Federal High Court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Fashola for alleged cyber crime.

The anti-graft agency preferred the charges on May 14, 2019.

Fashola, who sang the popular song “Am I a Yahoo Boy”, was arraigned on May 20, 2019, before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who pleaded not guilty.

Oweibo granted him bail in the sum of two million naira with two sureties in like sum.

Witnesses were still being led in evidence by EFCC when Oweibo was transfered out of the Lagos division of the court.

The case was, therefore, transferred to Justice Isaac Dipeolu.

On March 6, when the case was first mentioned before Dipeolu, both defence and prosecution counsel confirmed to the judge that there was a pending fiat awaiting a response from the chief judge.

The judge consequently adjourned the case until Thursday (May 30) for the report.

On Thursday, journalists learnt that the fiat had yet to be approved.

There is no slated date yet for the continuation of the trial.

According to the EFCC, the defendant committed the offences on different dates between Nov. 26, 2018, and Dec.11, 2018, as well as on May 10, 2019.

The commission alleged that Fashola and his accomplices conspired to use different Access Bank automated teller machine cards to defraud their victims.

It alleged that the defendant used a bank credit card issued to another person in a bid to obtain fraudulent financial gains.

The EFCC also said that the defendant possessed counterfeit credit cards belonging to different people, with intent to defraud, which, it said, amounted to theft.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 1 23 (1) (b), 27 (1), and 33(9) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition) Prevention Act, 2015.

Comedian Brainjotter Raises Over N20m For Physically Challenged Fan

During his show on May 25, comedian and social media influencer Chukwuebuka Amuzie, widely known as Brainjotter, successfully gathered over N20 million to support a physically challenged fan, Queen Onwunachie.

In a post on his verified Instagram page on Thursday, Brainjotter narrated how he met the woman, stating that she was the first to attend the show and watched while his team were setting up the sound ahead of the show.

“The show I planned in Abuja wasn’t my show, it was a woman’s show. I don’t know that God had other plans,” Brainjotter spoke in pidgin English in a video released on Thursday.

“So when the show was going on, I was in my hotel room upstairs at Transcorp Hilton, so I came downstairs to check what was going on. I saw this lady sitting down. I wasn’t aware that she didn’t have hands or legs, what she wore were plastic hands and legs,”
 he narrated further.

Afterwards, he noted that he took pictures with her and she later went upstairs to the show. Onwunachie, who also narrated her story noted that she went upstairs to where people who had regular tickets were to stay.

Meanwhile, Brainjotter noted that he had planned to make one person a millionaire during his show, however, “God had other plans.”

During the show, Brainjotter and his comedy colleagues, one of which was Samuel Perry, known as Broda Shaggi, started to pick random people from the crowd.

Onwunachie recounted that while the selection was being made, Brainjotter asked about the lady who was on crutches, whom he met earlier. She said people started shouting that she was in the regular section.

“So as Shaggi (Broda shaggi) was about to pick someone else, my mind went straight to that lady (Onwunachie). I remembered her,” Brainjotter said.

As seen during the show, the lady was called out from where she was and brought to the front of the stage, she was aided by the bouncers and some other people to get to the stage where Brainjotter was.

“The initial plan was to raise 1 million for the lady,”
he recounted.

Subsequently, he raised over N20 million, including a sponsor, who pledged to process her Visa to Canada

“So I want to say thank you to my benefactor, Brainjotter, and I want to thank Transcorp Hilton for accommodating me for the night. I want to say thank you. I am so grateful. God will bless everyone that contributed for me, God will bless you and God will bless brainjotter abundantly,”
Onwunachie said.

Brainjotter further encouraged his fans not to give up on their goals and ambitions in life.

“Don’t give up on your dreams, you don’t know when God wants to bless you, it always looks like a dream. Someone (Onwunachie) who came to show paying N19,000, went home with over N20 million naira. I’ve always said that the reward for gratitude is brighter. So on behalf of myself and my team, I want to say thank you to Abuja,”
Brainjotter said.

National Anthem: I Will Miss ‘Arise, O Compatriots’ – Singer, Teni Says

Teniola Apata, the popular Nigerian singer, who is simply known as Teni, has reacted to the change of Nigeria’s national anthem.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law to reinstate the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

Reacting, Teni said she would miss the replaced National Anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.”

She noted that she made so many childhood memories with the former anthem.

On her X handle, Teni wrote: “Arise o compatriots, I’ll miss you, thank you for so many childhood memories. till we meet again, love SM.”

‘Arise, O compatriots’ was adopted as Nigeria’s National Anthem in 1978.

The lyrics were composed by John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui and P. O. Aderibigbe.

The anthem was performed by the Nigeria Police Band under the directorship of B. E. Odiasse.

By the implication of the National Anthem Bill 2024 which was recently signed into law by President Tinubu, ‘Arise, O compatriots’ has now officially been replaced by the old anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ as Nigeria’s National Anthem.
