I Was S*xually Harassed By Music Executives As A Teenager – Nigerian Singer, Yemi Alade Reveals

Yemi Alade, the popular Nigerian singer, has reflected on the difficulties she encountered in her early years as an emerging female artist striving to break into the industry.

The Johnny crooner revealed that s*xual harassment was the major challenge she confronted, recalling how music executives often harassed her during meetings and studio sessions while she was still a teenager.

Speaking in a recent episode of the Swift Conversations podcast, Alade said, “In those beginning days, all I thought I needed was just my talent because that’s what I have. I didn’t have a bank account full of money I could use to sponsor myself.

“I just had a talent and a zeal, and a promise that I made to myself and a promise I believed God made to me. So, I always tried to show up. I was told that I needed to work harder and so I worked harder, and it wasn’t enough. There were doors I needed to walk up to and when I walked up to the doors, they didn’t want my talent, they wanted something else.

“Many times from business meetings to studio sessions to even winning certain awards and you meet maybe the managing director or any other executive and they are trying to rub your thighs under the table. And I was just a teen. My grand pa is rubbing my legs and I can’t speak because I’m in shock.

“We are having an actual business meeting. Why are you rubbing my thighs? I had to speak to myself and decided if music was what I wanted to do because the s*xual harassment was becoming too rampant. But something in me told me to keep pushing my talent. So, I still showed up. If door was left open for me, I would walk in. If it was shut in my face, I would walk away.”

The singer said she became successful in the music industry after she realised that she “needed to stop walking through the doors and start breaking down the walls.”

WCQ Playoff: ‘You Won’t Do That If I Were Captain’ – Obi Mikel Slams Iwobi Over Controversial Video

Former Chelsea defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel has criticized Fulham’s Alex Iwobi over a controversial video he posted ahead of Nigeria’s 4-1 victory against Gabon.

Iwobi’s video showed the state of the Super Eagles’ hotel in Morocco ahead of the World Cup playoff fixtures.

Ahead of the games against Gabon and DR Congo, the Super Eagles were lodged at Rive Hotel in Rabat.

Iwobi’s silent video stirred reactions online, with Nigerians questioning the preparedness of the Nigeria Football Federation for the game.

The Arsenal youth product later clarified that he had no intention of criticising the hotel or the football authorities.

But speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel, who captained the Super Eagles during his active days, said: “Again, Alex Iwobi, that picture, maybe it was taken innocently and him posting it up.

“But again, as a player playing in Europe, living in a nice accommodation, you should have known better, two days before the game.

“Don’t put that up. I read the comments; you don’t want that negativity, you don’t want that around two days before the playoff games.

“If I was the captain, I would tell him to take that down straight away. Take it off your Instagram, take it down, we don’t need that.”

Nigeria defeated Gabon 4-1 in extra time of the semi-final playoffs, while DR Congo beat Cameroon in the other tie.

The Super Eagles went on to lose to DR Congo in the final playoff match on Sunday night.
