INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has asked traditional rulers in Kogi State to support the commission’s efforts to hold peaceful, open and credible elections in 2027.
He made the appeal on Thursday in Lokoja, during a meeting with traditional rulers from Kogi’s 21 local government areas.
He said the meeting was part of INEC’s review of its staff and infrastructure ahead of the 2027 general elections and the coming off-cycle governorship election.
Amupitan urged the monarchs to use their influence at the grassroots to encourage peaceful participation, voter awareness and acceptance of credible results.
“The success of the electoral process requires cooperation between INEC and traditional institutions,” he said.
He called on eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
He added that they should help fight misinformation and disinformation that could weaken public trust in the election.
Amupitan said INEC is working to strengthen its operations through infrastructure upgrades and modern technology.
Speaking for the traditional rulers, the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Alhaji Ahmed Tijani Muhammad, pledged the council’s support for INEC.
Joash also asked the commission to be fair, honest, and follow the rules
