The past two weeks has been filled with the biggest news in the world of football, the MEXIT SAGA. Barcelona star, Lionel Messi on the 25th of August, 2020, sent a burofax to the club telling them he wants to leave. 15 years after his senior debut, the World’s best footballer wants to leave his darling Barcelona. The news met Barcelona fans all around the world with great shock and mixed feelings.
During Messi’s last contract extension birthed a clause that allows him to leave for free at the end of the season. He sent a burofax to the club to activate the clause but the club refused. The club expressly stated that the clause can only be activated in June and not in August as the season was supposed to end in June. Messi was disappointed with the club as he never expected the turn of action from them. Bartomeu gave Messi his word that. The Argentine can leave for free( at the end of the season) whenever he pleases.
The past weeks also saw Messi’s entourage speaking with Pep Guardiola and Representatives of Manchester City. The only obstacle to that transfer was the refusal of Barcelona to honor the clause in Messi’s contract as the English club were ready to foot the huge wages of the Argentine.
On Friday the 4th of September, 2020, in an interview with goal, Messi spoke publicly on the saga for the first time and his decision to stay at Barcelona was made known but that wasn’t the most important part of the interview. For the first time, Messi publicly attacked Barcelona’s President Josep Maria Bartomeu. He accused the man of not keeping his promise of allowing him to leave whenever he wants to. He also laid emphasis on Barcelona’s lack of sporting project.
The incompetence of Barcelona’s board and the lack of a sporting project has seen Barcelona hanging on a slippery slope, the final nail was however driven into their coffin when Bayern demolished them in Lisbon.
Since 2014, the decisions of the Barca board has been questionable. Barca has seen her worst days in the 21st century with Sandro Rosell and Bartomeu at the helm of affairs. From the shady Neymar deal to the complete neglect of the La Masía, an academy that gave the world some of the best players in history. In addition to the misery of Barcelona is a squad full of over 30 players and a ridiculous wage bill. The Sporting and economic decisions of the Club have been Abysmal and disgraceful. All these flaws and cracks have been covered by the brilliance of Arguably the best player in history, Lionel Messi. This same Lionel Messi has been a subject of attack by Bartomeu-paid Spanish and Catalan media. No player is bigger than the club but Barcelona should never bring dishonor to it’s greatest player of all time.
The solutions to the problems of Barcelona is dependent on the duration of Bartomeu at the helm. The Administration of Josep Bartomeu has hit rock bottom and new ideas are needed at Barcelona. The Administration has taken Barca on a trip of incompetence, thoughtlessness, Myopic and short term plan and Chronic corruption. For Barcelona to be great again, they need to retrace their steps and find their feet again like in the days of Laporta. This can only be achieved without Bartomeu at the helm of affairs.
Barca must rebuild and the following factors must be taken into consideration by the club
- There should be a working Sporting project.
- Good Squad planning: Rid the team of over 30 players that cannot compete again at the highest level.
- Have a tangible plan for Post-Messi Era while also maximising his final years.
- Trust the Kids. The La Masía should be trust once again.
Hopefully, we will see the good old Barcelona again.
