The 2019/2020 Football season saw a host of new signings since it’s commencement in August 2019. Several Clubs across Europe look to the transfer market to improve their teams. The summer of 19/20 season saw heavy reinforcements and flow of money across the continent. EPL clubs were the busiest in the summer with their spendings summing up to £1.4Bn. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid being the top 3 clubs in Spain spent a combine €806m with Real Madrid spending about 35% of that amount. Juventus, AC Milan, Inter, Roma and Napoli also spent a combined €690m while the top 2 sides in Germany spent just €271m.
Much were expected from the summer signings with the top 3 signings done in Spain. João Felix cost Atleti €126m, Antoine Griezmann cost Barca €120m and the transfer of Eden Hazard to Madrid cost the Spanish club €100m. In today’s market, it would not be fair enough to rate a player’s delivery based on his price as the two parameters are not exactly proportional to each other but to whom much is given, much is expected.
After 32 appearances and 2342, João Felix has scored 8 times and assisted 4 times, quite underwhelming for his huge price tag.
Eden Hazard has had 18 starting appearances and played 1392 minutes of football and could only produce a goal and 4 assists averaging approximately 278minutes per goal and assist. This is ridiculous for a player of his calibre and even more ridiculous for his huge price tag. The 28 year old’s Madrid career has been rough with unpleasant injuries and fitness issues.
Antoine Griezmann on the other hand hasn’t been quite convincing for Barcelona but he has however managed to grind out 15 goals and 4 assists in 44 games. He has been the best performer out of the top 3 signings but it is still quite underwhelming by his price tag and standard. The top 3 signings are the most expensive and have been the most underwhelming of the signings made in the summer transfer window.
Romelu Lukaku has been an important player ever since he moved to inter from Manchester for €65m and is currently only behind Ciro Immobile and Cristiano Ronaldo on goals. He has contributed to 31(26G, 5A) goals in 40 games for Internazionale and formed a formidable duo with Lautaro Martínez.
Nicolas Pepe has been struggling to find his feet in England after his €80m switch from France. The Ivorian has only managed 9 goals and 8 assists in 41 appearances. His price tag coupled with the brilliant 18/19 season he had in Lille has made fans highly expectant of his delivery at Arsenal and he hasn’t been convincing so far.
The best bargains and business were however done in January 2020 with Dortmund signing Braut Erling Haaland for €22.5m from RB Salzburg and Manchester United signing ace midfielder Bruno Fernandes for £46.6m from Sporting Lisbon. These transfers have proven to be the more effective than most summer transfers. Following his brilliant run of games at Salzburg, Dortmund acquired the Norwegian gunman and he started firing from introduction. He has gone on to score 15 goals and assist 2 goals in just 17 games taking his total goal for the season to 53. What a season he has had. Hopefully, he will be able to reciprocate this in coming seasons.
The Transfer of Bruno Fernandes from Lisbon to Manchester has been the most effective and impactful transfer made this season and the Portuguese Maestro only cost £46.6m. He has been the most important player for United since his arrival from Lisbon. He has been involved in 11 goals(6G, 5A) in 9 premier league games. His arrival didn’t just bring goals and assists, it brought life back into the United team, it brought balance into their midfield and their attack has been rapid since he arrived. He has formed a formidable duo with Frenchman Paul Pogba and they both look like they have been playing together for years. Man United has not lost a game post lockdown and he is the main reason why. Expectations of him were high and he delivered effortlessly. With he and Pogba being fit, we might just see the old United back next season. He is without an iota of doubt, the most effective signing of the season.
