AFCON: My Dad Made Me Do It – Ndidi Explains Nwankwo Kanu’s Goal Celebration

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has explained why he celebrated his goal against Tunisia by mimicking Kanu Nwankwo’s iconic celebration at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics against Brazil.

Ndidi scored Nigeria’s second goal of the match after Victor Osimhen had already given them the lead in the first half.

It was Ndidi’s first goal for the Super Eagles, a team he has been part of for more than ten years.

The defensive midfielder recreated the 1996 Olympic goal celebration, famously performed by Nigerian and Arsenal legend, Kanu Nwankwo.

“I just remember my dad; my dad always used to talk about Kanu and everything,”
the former Leicester City star said.

“So I saw the video, and I said, ‘Oh, I’ll do that one for my dad.’”

With the win, Nigeria became the second team to reach the knockout stage of the tournament in North America, joining Egypt as the first two teams to qualify.

Egypt’s 1-0 victory against South Africa on Friday had made them the first team to advance to the next stage of the tournament.

Nigeria’s next game is against Uganda, who have played two games, losing one to Tunisia and drawing with Tanzania.

NFF Clears Air On FIFA’s Response Regarding DR Congo Players’ Eligibility Dispute Against Nigeria

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified that it is yet to receive a response from FIFA concerning its protest over the eligibility of some Democratic Republic of Congo players who featured in the 2026 World Cup African playoff against the Super Eagles weeks ago.

NFF, however, categorically stated that the situation is still under consideration.

This statement comes in response to media claims that FIFA had dismissed Nigeria’s appeal following the Super Eagles’ defeat to DR Congo in the play-off final.

Speaking on the development, NFF Secretary General, Mohammed Sanusi, confirmed that no official updates have been received from FIFA concerning the petition.

“The Nigeria Football Federation wrote a petition to FIFA on the eligibility of some of the players of DR Congo, and if there is anything, FIFA will reply to the NFF,”
Sanusi said during an interview on AIT.

“The NFF has not received any letter from FIFA saying they have thrown away our petition. We have checked our emails, and there was no letter from FIFA.

“I don’t know where they got their information from. If there is any such letter, let them show it, unless they have someone in FIFA giving them information ahead of official communication.”

AFCON: You’re Distorted, Overweight – Babayaro Slams Super Eagles Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali

Former Nigeria U23 goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro has criticized Super Eagles shot-stopper Stanley Nwabali amid the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The 49-year-old branded Nwabali as distorted, insisting that his passes were not good and the Chippa United goalkeeper is also overweight.

“They [Super Eagles management] need to look at Nwabali,”
Babayaro stated on the ATHLST podcast.

“I’m sorry to say this, he is amazing, but he is overweight and Nigeria were lucky against Tanzania that two of their shots were not on target, else they would’ve been in our net.

“Nwabali’s passes were not in sync and he is a bit distorted,” he said.

Nwabali has been Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper since head coach Eric Chelle took over some months ago. He led Nigeria to second position at the last edition of the AFCON.

AFCON: Ademola Lookman Sends Message To Nigerians After Super Eagles 3-2 Win Over Tunisia

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has addressed Nigerian fans after their 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday night.

Lookman provided two assists and netted one to earn himself the Man of the Match in the 3-2 win over the Carthage Eagles.

Nigeria has made it to the round of sixteen with the win and will play Uganda in a game that is no longer of much importance to the team.

Lookman has been outstanding so far in the competition, having won the game against Tanzania for Eric Chelle’s side.

Speaking after the game against Tunisia, Lookman said, “We’re in the right direction. I think today we’re outstanding from the first half into the second half, and then, you know, they had a spell in which they scored two goals.

“But apart from that, we were very good today.”

Asked if he had any particular message to the  Nigerian fans, he added, “Keep supporting us.

“We really need you. So keep on being behind us. Keep on driving us and yeah, keep supporting us. Thank you.”

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Thrash Tunisia 3-2 To Qualify For Round Of 16

Nigeria secured qualification for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a thrilling 3–2 win over Tunisia on Saturday night.

The Super Eagles began their tournament with a narrow 2-1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday.

And they came into this game knowing that three points against the Carthage Eagles will put them in control of Group C.

The North Africans had thrashed Uganda 3-0 in their opening fixture and were also keen to qualify.

But Victor Osimhen headed Nigeria into the lead before the break, before goals from Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman put Eric Chelle’s men in firm control.

Tunisia pulled one back through Montassar Talbi, before a late penalty was converted by Ali Al-Abdi.

The result means Nigeria have six points from two matches, while Tunisia remain second with three points.

Nigeria vs Tunisia AFCON 2025 Preview: Kick-Off Time, Head-To-Head, Where To Watch

One of African football’s most storied rivalries takes the spotlight again on Saturday night as Nigeria faces Tunisia in a crucial Group C clash at the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Fès, Morocco.

Both teams come into the fixture buoyed by victories on Matchday One and know that another win could be enough to seal early qualification for the knockout rounds. It is also an opportunity for Nigeria to respond to recent history against opponents who knocked them out of the 2021 AFCON in the round of 16.

The Super Eagles opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Tanzania, with Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman on target. Tunisia were more commanding in their first outing, easing past Uganda 3-1 thanks to goals from Ellyes Skhiri and a brace by Elias Achouri to sit top of the group.

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chell, said his players have worked hard in training and understand the level of focus required against a technically strong Tunisian side.

“For this game, we had a training session to recover, and we tried to put more intensity in the training session. Tunisia is a great team, and they are playing very well. Let’s go for this game,” Chelle said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

The Franco-Malian tactician admitted that there were moments Nigeria could improve on from the Tanzania match, but was pleased with the mentality shown by his players.

“We analysed the game, and we did some things in the game, bad and good. But the goal was bad for us,” he said. “The reality was that we scored immediately after the goal, and that was a good reaction. We will work on it, and if there is no mistake, there is no goal, but my players are very ready for this game.”

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi believes the team is mentally prepared, particularly after the disappointment of their 1-0 defeat to Tunisia at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

“It was a painful loss in 2021. It gives us more confidence when we talk about it. We don’t want to think about what happened; we just want to face this one,”
 Ndidi said.

“Definitely, it is a new team, good players, and a good group. We spoke highly of it because it is not going to happen twice, hopefully.”

Ndidi also dismissed suggestions that Nigeria are under pressure following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“There’s no pressure on us, no pressure at all. We didn’t qualify for the World Cup, but we are actually ready for this tournament; it’s just like another opportunity to correct the wrong,”
 he added.

Tunisia defender Moutassar Taibli said the Carthage Eagles are fully aware of Nigeria’s attacking quality, led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.

“We know Nigeria’s attackers are high-level players, but with experience and concentration, the result will be positive,”
Taibli said.

Saturday’s match will be staged at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, with a vibrant atmosphere expected. Historically, the fixture has been finely balanced. The two nations have met 21 times over the last 64 years, recording six wins each, with nine draws.

At AFCON finals, Nigeria hold a slight advantage, claiming four victories compared to Tunisia’s two. Their most recent meeting came at the 2021 tournament, when Tunisia edged a Round of 16 tie 1-0 through Youssef Msakni’s second-half goal. Nigeria, however, had the upper hand at the 2019 AFCON, winning 1-0 in the third-place play-off thanks to Odion Ighalo’s strike.

Where to watch Nigeria vs Tunisia Clash and kick-off time:

The AFCON 2025 group match between Nigeria and Tunisia is scheduled to kick off at 9 p.m. (Nigerian time) later tonight, December 27 at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, Fès.

The match will be on dedicated Super Sports channels on DSTV, Star Time, SportyTV, CAF TV, Channel 4, beIN Sports, and many others.

Malian referee, Boubou Traore, will officiate the Group C table-toppers clash.
